A GENTLE REMINDER DURING BROWNOUTS

When the power goes out, it’s easy to feel frustrated.

No lights. No electric fan. No internet. No phone signal. And when the weather is bad, the discomfort can feel even heavier.

But in those moments, let’s pause for a while and remember the people working quietly behind the scenes, the linemen who are out there trying to bring our electricity back.

While we stay inside our homes, they may be standing under the rain, driving through slippery and dangerous roads, walking through dark areas, and climbing poles to repair damaged lines.

Sometimes, they have to wait for the storm to weaken before they can safely begin. And sometimes, even while the rain is still falling, they go out because they know that many families are waiting for their lights to come back.

They, too, have families waiting at home.

They, too, get tired.
They, too, get scared.
And most importantly, they, too, have lives they want to come home to.

So the next time there’s a brownout, let’s try to be patient.

Instead of getting angry, let’s remember the men and women doing everything they can, not only to restore our electricity, but to make sure they can do it without losing a life.

Let’s thank them in our hearts.
Let’s pray for their safety.
And let’s give them the time they need to do their job safely.

Because the light we are waiting for isn’t restored by a switch alone.

Somebody has to go out into the darkness and fight to bring that light back home.

And sometimes, while we wait for the lights to come back on,
they are risking their own lives so that ours can return to normal.
