MANILA โ€“ The Commission on Elections (Comelec) stood firm on its decision to maintain the scheduled period of filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) for the 2025 midterm polls set from Oct. 1 to 8.

Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia opposed the proposal of Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. to delay the filing of COCs to December, noting that this would affect their preparations for the midterm polls and the first Bangsamoro parliamentary elections, both set on May 12, 2025.

"Delaying the filing of Certificates of Candidacy will have far-reaching implications. Maraming matatamaan (A lot would be affected), printing of the ballots, extending the filing of pre-election cases and their resolutions,โ€ the poll body chief said in a phone interview.

Garcia added that they need to have more time for the printing of the ballots since they would be printing precinct-specific ballots to include the names of all the candidates.

"As practiced in recent elections, we will have pre-printed ballots, and they will number to more or less 70 million ballots," Garcia added in a separate radio interview.

Garcia said rescheduling the COC filing period would compromise their preparations for the simultaneous midterm and Bangsamoro polls, the bulk of which are set in the fourth quarter of this year.

He also sees no logic in moving the COC filing period.

โ€œKung talagang tatakbo kayo, bakit ipagpapaliban pa ng dalawang buwan? Kung tatakbo, tatakbo. Kung hindi, hindi (If you really want to run, why postpone it for two months. Just run if you want to. If not, then don't run),โ€ he said.

In House Resolution No. 1942, the Manila lawmaker is pushing to reschedule the COC filing deadline from Oct. 8 to Dec. 8, saying that delaying the filing period will provide "sufficient time for candidates to make the appropriate evaluations, preparations, and decisions".

Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia made the remark following calls for the deferment of the Dec. 1, 2025 polls.

"The fixing of the date of election is an absolute discretion of Congress, so long as it complies with the guidelines/criteria laid down by the Supreme Court in case of postponement and resetting," he said in a phone interview.

Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte filed House Bill 10344 seeking to move the village and youth polls to Oct. 26, 2026.

In filing the bill, the Bicol lawmaker said moving the BSKE to a later date is necessary as the current village and youth officials will only serve for two years, instead of three, if the polls will push through next year.

The poll body chief said it can only act on the measure once it is signed into law by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Meanwhile, Garcia said they will continue with their preparations for the polls scheduled late next year.

"We will prepare to conduct the BSKE in 2025. Our preparations cannot be slowed by a mere possibility or speculation," he said.

The last BSKE was held in October 2023. (PNA)

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ The political parties of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Speaker Martin Romualdez have formalized an alliance for the 2025 midterm elections, a move that establishes the base of the administrationโ€™s senatorial ticket in next yearโ€™s vote.

Marcosโ€™ Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) signed the agreement with Romualdezโ€™s Lakas-CMD on Wednesday, May 8.

PFP, according to its national president South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo, is home to nearly half of the governors in the country.

Lakas-CMD, where Romualdez is party president, is the most dominant bloc in the House, boasting 100 members that account for one-third of the chamberโ€™s members.

MANILA โ€“ Over 2.4 million Filipinos have already submitted applications as registered voters for the May 2025 midterm polls.

Latest data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed there are now 2,473,922 individuals who filed their applications since the start of the resumption of registration activities last Feb. 12 until April 29.

In an interview Tuesday, Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said these figures indicate they are "on the right track" in achieving their target of 3 million voter registrants.

He attributed the high number of applicants to Filipinos who would like to exercise their right to suffrage.

"Each Filipino now values the importance of voting more than ever," Laudiangco said.

Of the number, Region 4-A (Calabarzon) still has the most number of applicants with 454,313; followed by the National Capital Region with 367,869; and Region 3 (Central Luzon) with 286,190.

Meanwhile, Region 7 (Central Visayas) has 176,584; Region 11 (Davao Region), 135,654; Region 6 (Western Visayas), 129,711; Region 10 (Northern Mindanao), 121,982; Region 5 (Bicol Region), 103,399; and Region 12 (Soccsksargen), 102,598 were the other areas with more than 100,000 applicants.

The lowest number of registrants are the Cordillera Administrative Region with 31,593; Region 4-B (Mimaropa) with 61,344; and Region 13 (Caraga) with 64,857.

The deadline of the voter registration period is Sept. 30. (PNA)
