The White Leghorn is the most popular and efficient egg-laying chicken breed in the world. Originating from Tuscany, Italy (named after the port city of Livorno), these slender, active birds are celebrated for producing up to 280–320 large white eggs annually.🐔

Quick Facts & Characteristics

Appearance: Solid white plumage, large red single combs (which often flop to one side in hens), yellow legs, and reddish eyes.

Weight: Lightweight and slim; hens weigh 4–5 lbs (1.8–2.3 kg) and roosters weigh 5–6 lbs (2.3–2.7 kg).

Meat/Brooding: Poor for meat production and rarely go "broody" (meaning they will not sit on eggs to hatch them).

🥚 Egg Production Output: 280 to 320 white eggs per year.

Efficiency: They are highly prized for their exceptional feed-to-egg conversion ratio.

Size: Eggs weigh at least 55 grams and grow larger as the hen ages.

⚡ Temperament & Care Personality: Skittish, alert, and active.

They are independent foragers but are generally not friendly or suitable to be kept as cuddly pets.

Climate Tolerance: They are hardy, though the large single-comb variety is susceptible to frostbite in freezing temperatures.

Space: Because they are highly active, they require ample space or large coops to prevent boredom and flightiness.
