𝐁𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐀𝐘 𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐔𝐁𝐈𝐂

𝐋𝐚𝐡𝐢 𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐮 visited Subic Bay in March 2018 during the Commodore’s Cup Regatta hosted by Subic Sailing Club, shortly before joining the historic Balangay expedition to Xiamen, China.

Seven years later, 𝐁/𝐁 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐃𝐚𝐬 arrived in Subic Bay on March 26, 2025 to support the BPI Subic Bay Regatta.

These visits made Subic Bay part of the continuing Balangay story. Here, ancient Filipino maritime heritage meets modern sailing, education and ocean stewardship.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐲 reminds us that Subic Bay is not only a destination for modern yachts. It is also a place where Filipinos can reconnect with their seafaring roots and help carry this heritage forward.

More than 1,000 years ago, long before the Spanish arrived, the people of Butuan were already skilled builders, sailors and traders.

They carefully shaped large wooden planks and joined them using wooden pegs and strong fiber ropes. Building these boats required knowledge, planning and teamwork.

Boats like these helped people travel, carry goods and connect with communities across Southeast Asia. Ceramics, glass and gold-working materials found around Butuan show that it was once part of a busy maritime trading network.

The Butuan Boats remind us that our ancestors were intelligent, organized and connected to the wider world.
