The Department of Biology invites the Ateneo community to a Special Seminar with 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅𝘅𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝘆, 𝗣𝗵𝗗, on September 25, 2026 (Friday), at 5:00 PM in Faura 223.

Dr. Ty is a recent PhD graduate of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at KU Leuven and a cm laude alumna of Ateneo de Manila University, where she earned her BS in Life Sciences with a specialization in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in 2016. Her doctoral research, conducted across KU Leuven and VIB-UGent, investigated the molecular mechanisms behind programmed cell death and stress-induced senescence in pear fruits, linking fundamental plant biology with crop storage and postharvest quality.

In this talk, she returns to her alma mater to share both her research experience in Belgium and the less polished side of the PhD journey: the failures and, more importantly, the mindset that helped her through it.

The Department of Biology mourns the passing of Dr. Sabine Schoppe, one of the country's leading conservationists and a true warrior of biodiversity. She co-founded Katala Foundation, Inc. in 1998 and has since worked tirelessly on the conservation of the Philippine cockatoo, Palawan forest turtle, and Philippine pangolin through research and community engagement.

We offer our sincerest condolences to her friends, family, and colleagues in the conservation community.

Dr. Sabine Schoppe, a leading Palawan wildlife conservationist, dies at 63 after decades of protecting threatened species.

The Department of Biology invites students, researchers, and members of the academic community to a Research Seminar featuring the current projects of the 𝗔𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗼 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 (𝗔𝗙𝗠𝗠𝗕) 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽, on September 15, 2026 (Tuesday), from 5:00 to 6:30 PM at SEC B201.

Presenting are Crisanto M. Lopez (Faculty), John Moises G. Relles (Faculty), Linang L. Echanis, Matthieu Adrien Tao, Jamina Marie Tagapan, Zylem M. Diaz, Agnella Pura, Milque Macatangay, Rynel Mirallo, Andre Benedict Sevilla, and Harvey Loquias.

The seminar will give an overview of the current projects of AFMMB. The Microbial Biotechnology subgroup will feature two presentations: Integrated Protein Research and Development Center (IPRDC) Project 1 and Integrated Diagnostic Solutions (IDS) Project 1. IPRDC P1 will present the use of 𝙀𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙞 in the production of functional recombinant enzymes used in the molecular diagnosis of communicable diseases. IDS P1 will emphasize the usefulness of bacteria in the development of aptamers, nanobodies, and LAMP assay in the genomic and proteomic detection of cancer biomarkers. The Food Microbiology subgroup will introduce the detection of Norovirus and Rotavirus in fresh lettuce commercially sold in wet markets in Quezon City.

We invite the Ateneo community to learn more about the diverse applications of microorganisms in food safety, biotechnology, and molecular diagnostics.

Published in Plants, People, Planet (2026), the open letter calls for independent, site-based verification of biodiversity outcomes from nature-based projects, highlighting the need to distinguish genuine ecological restoration from tree-planting and reforestation efforts that may lack measurable ecological outcomes.

The Bicol Region is home to remarkable native tree diversity, including many endemic and threatened species. This new guidebook features species profiles, photographs, field-tested propagation protocols, and conservation assessments to support tree identification, restoration, and biodiversity conservation.

Published by the Energy Development Corporation through its BINHI program, the guidebook was produced through an AFoCO-supported forest restoration project in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
