Temperatures on Mt. Pulag can drop to near-freezing levels especially at Campsite 2 and during the early morning assault to the summit. High wind chill and dampness can cause rapid body heat loss.
Proper layering uses a 3-to-4 layer system designed to trap warm air, regulate sweat during trekking, and block wind or rain.
1. 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 (𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁)
◾Purpose: Pulls sweat away from your skin so you don't get chilled when you stop moving.
◾Tops: Long-sleeve thermal top (synthetic polyester or merino wool).
◾Bottoms: Thermal leggings / compression tights.
◾Critical Rule: Strictly avoid cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture, stays wet, and causes hypothermia in cold conditions.
2. 𝗠𝗶𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 (𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻)
◾Purpose: Traps body heat to keep you warm while resting or waiting for sunrise at the summit.
◾Upper Body Options:
◽Fleece Jacket: Ideal while active on the trail as it breathes well.
◽Down Jacket / Puffer: Compact and lightweight with high warmth-to-weight ratio. Wear this at the campsite and summit.
◾Lower Body Options: Trekking pants (convertible or quick-dry fabric). Wearing thermal leggings under quick-dry pants is sufficient for most hikers.
3. 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 (𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻)
◾Purpose: Shields you from cold mountain winds, condensation, fog, and rain.
◾Jacket: Waterproof and windproof jacket (Gore-Tex or heavy-duty rain shell with sealed seams).
◾Pants: Windbreaker or waterproof rain pants to pull over your trekking trousers if wind or rain picks up.
4. 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀
Extremities lose heat quickly and require extra insulation during cold spells:
◾Head & Neck: Warm knitted beanie (covers ears) and a neck gaiter or balaclava.
◾Hands: Inner thermal glove liners + outer waterproof/windproof gloves or mittens.
◾Feet: Moisture-wicking wool hiking socks (bring 2–3 pairs, reserving 1 dry pair strictly for sleep).
𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹
◾Start Cool: When starting the trek from ranger station or campsite, dress slightly cool. Body heat increases rapidly within 10 minutes of walking.
◾Adjust Mid-Trek: Unzip layers or drop down to your base layer while climbing to avoid sweating excessively. Put your insulating puffer jacket back on as soon as you stop for rests.
◾Summit Prep: Put on all 3–4 layers before leaving camp for the dawn summit assault, as temperatures are lowest and wind exposure is highest along the grassland trail.
Now that you know how to properly layer your clothes for extreme cold, it’s time to put that knowledge into action! 🏔️❄️
