Catawba Island Club: DockWise Rating Breakdown

DockWise rates marinas in a very different and important way. The goal is to help pair boaters with a marina or yacht club that fits both their needs and their docking abilities. This gives a potential new member a much better idea of what to expect before they commit.

Let’s start with Docking Difficulty. This is a rating feature exclusive to DockWise, and we think it’s extremely important.

⚓ Catawba Island Club received a C- for Docking Difficulty.

For context, DockWise recommends a B- or better for newer and intermediate boaters. A C rating or below doesn’t mean the marina is bad. It simply means the physical docking environment can be more demanding and may be better suited for experienced boaters.

So how did Catawba get a C-?

DockWise looks at two major factors: fairway width and prevailing wind speed and direction.

The fairway width we measured was approximately 66 feet. It may be wider in other areas, but 66 feet is the measurement used for this rating. Our guideline is that a fairway should ideally be at least 1.5 times the boat’s length. Based on that guideline, this particular area is best suited for boats roughly 44 feet or less.

Why does that matter? You need enough room to maneuver if the first docking attempt doesn’t go as planned. The wider the fairway, the more margin for error.

💨 Now let’s talk about wind.

The historical prevailing conditions used by DockWise show approximately SW winds at 12 MPH, based on two years of weather data. Docking generally becomes more difficult once winds exceed about 10 MPH, especially with crosswinds.

Catawba received its C- because of the combination of fairway width, prevailing wind speed, and the potential for crosswinds.

Boats equipped with bow thrusters may find these conditions considerably easier to manage.

Important: A C- does not mean Catawba is a poor marina. It means the physical docking environment can be more demanding. That’s exactly why DockWise separates Docking Difficulty from marina quality.

⭐ VALUE & AMENITIES: 90/100, EXCELLENT

This is where Catawba Island Club really shines.

Catawba currently scores 90 out of 100, and that could potentially go even higher once pricing is reviewed.

I’ve personally stayed at the hotel and had the opportunity to spend some time there. Catawba Island Club is fantastic in just about every way.

DockWise separates amenities into two categories:

Tier 1, Functional: Things that directly affect the boating experience, such as shore power and water connections.

Tier 2, Comfort & Lifestyle: Things like laundry facilities and other conveniences that make your stay more enjoyable.

Tier 1 amenities are weighted more heavily. Laundry is certainly nice to have, but depending on your boat, shore power and water can be necessities.

Our current Value & Amenities scoring breaks down like this:

• Pricing: 25%
• Dock type and condition: 25%
• Amenities: 50%

We’re also working on adding ambience as 10% of the scoring system. Based on my experience there, Catawba would likely score extremely well in that category.

The bigger picture

The Compare Marinas feature is completely FREE for everyone. No DockWise subscription is required.

DockWise currently rates many marinas and yacht clubs throughout the Detroit River, Maumee River, and Lake Erie. We plan to continue expanding and eventually rate marinas throughout all of the Great Lakes.

A DockWise subscription is $69/year, but that is for access to our other boating tools, including Compare Docks, detailed docking plans, and additional DockWise features.

The idea behind Compare Marinas is simple:

Don’t just ask, “Is this a good marina?”

Ask, “Is this a good marina for me, my boat, and my docking ability?”

That’s the question DockWise is trying to answer.
