🔹Worldwide, scientists estimate there are only about 800-1,000 Mediterranean monk seals left. That makes them among the rarest seal species on Earth 🌎

🔹The Madeira population is tiny and isolated. Current estimates are usually around 20-30 individuals, sometimes slightly more depending on the year and counting method.

🔹In the 1980s, they were almost extinct in Madeira - only 6–8 seals remained around the Desertas Islands.
