📍 Accommodation in Ponta Delgada, Azores

I stayed at Hostel AzorAzul and can recommend it!
💰 15€ per night, breakfast included.
📌 Great location – close to the city center, but still easy to park nearby.
The hostel is clean and well maintained.
There’s a nice rooftop terrace with a pool and sea view (not very useful when it’s raining the whole stay 😅).
💡 What is useful: a hairdryer available – with the Azores humidity, you end up using it on everything, not just your hair!
Overall, a great budget-friendly place to stay in Ponta Delgada.

🚗 Renting a Car in São Miguel, Azores 🚗

I rented a car through Amazing Islands..and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend them.
I paid 120 € for 6 days and appreciated that there was no deposit, but that’s where the positives ended. I specifically booked the smallest category (because parallel parking is not my superpower 😅), yet they gave me this giant. I believe for somebody it could be an advantage though..
There was no radio, only Bluetooth connection. And for me, loud music in the car is part of the holiday vibe! 🎶
The brakes were making strange noises. But when I mentioned it to the staff, I was told it was “normal” and that all C3 cars do that – and that I should check it on the internet. Not exactly reassuring..

🔄 What I’d do next time?
I’d go with IslandRent instead.
You don’t need a credit card, there is no deposit, and the car is fully insured.
Plus, with the code “AzoryCesky5” you get 5% off.
Another option is to use your own insurance, have a credit card, and rent a car for just a few euros a day from the major agencies..

🛣️ Driving in São Miguel
The main roads are really good, smooth and easy to navigate. Inside some small towns it can get a bit challenging. What surprised me most was the local parking style – people often park right in front of their houses on narrow roads, leaving space for exactly one car to pass… and usually a small one. So yes, I definitely practiced my “reverse driving skills” (or lack of them 😅).
🌋 Overall, having a car on São Miguel is absolutely worth it for the freedom and hidden gems you can reach – just choose your rental company wisely.

✈️ First time in Portugal 🇵🇹

1. Our trip starts in Porto

🔹 The birthplace of Port wine – The world-famous Port wine originates here, and many of the best cellars are located across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia.

🔹 Azulejos everywhere – Porto is a living gallery of blue-and-white tiles. São Bento Station alone has over 20,000 tiles telling the story of Portugal’s history.

🔹 The world’s most beautiful bookstore – Livraria Lello is said to have inspired J.K. Rowling while she lived in Porto.

🔹 Bridges with stories – Porto has six iconic bridges, each with its own charm. The Dom Luís I Bridge was designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel — and it shows.

💡 Special Tip:
Want to discover Porto through the eyes of someone who knows it? Stay at a hostel — you’re almost guaranteed to meet someone who just came back from exploring the city and will be more than happy (for some coffee and pastel de nata) to create a personal mini-tour just for you.

Visiting Frigiliana 🐐

👑 Award-Winning Beauty:
Frigiliana has been voted one of the “Prettiest Villages in Spain” multiple times

🧱 Storytelling Tiles Everywhere
Throughout the village, you’ll find 12 ceramic panels telling the story of the 16th-century Battle of the Peñón de Frigiliana, when the Moors resisted the Christian forces. It’s like a history lesson written on the walls!

🍷 Home to Sweet Wine
The locals produce a delicious Muscatel wine, made from grapes grown on the sunny slopes surrounding the village. It pairs beautifully with tapas and local cheese. 🍇

🥾 Gateway to Nature
It’s located right next to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. You can find trails leading to waterfalls, caves, and breathtaking viewpoints.

🎨 A Village of Artists
Frigiliana attracts painters, writers, and photographers from all over the world. Many small galleries and craft shops display handmade ceramics, jewelry, and art inspired by Andalusian life.

Visiting Nerja 😍 NERJA LOVERS

🏝️ Nerja is home to Burriana Beach, one of the most famous beaches in Andalusia, perfect for sun, sea, and paella right by the shore.
🗿 The Nerja Caves are over 5 million years old and stretch for almost 5 kilometers – they even host concerts in their natural amphitheater! 🎶
🎬 Nerja became famous worldwide thanks to the iconic Spanish TV series “Verano Azul” – you can still see the boat from the show on display by the sea.
🌅 From the Balcón de Europa, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and, on clear days, even catch a glimpse of Africa!

Whether you love history, stunning beaches, or charming Andalusian streets, Nerja is a place that captures the heart of every visitor. ❤️

One day trip to Granada 🏔

Free Parking Tip 🚗
We parked for free near the Parque de las Ciencias, which is in a non‑regulated zone south‑west of the old town. It’s about a 20‑minute walk into the centro histórico, a perfect warm‑up before hitting the sights.

1️⃣ The Alhambra - One of the most beautiful monuments in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A must-see when you visit Granada! Unfortunately, tickets were sold 3 months ahead so only gardens this time..

2️⃣ Free Tapas - Order a drink, get a free tapa. Yes, it’s true! Granada is one of the last cities in Spain to keep this amazing tradition alive.

3️⃣ Snow & Sun in the Same Day - Ski in the Sierra Nevada in the morning and relax on the Mediterranean beach in the afternoon. Where else can you do that?

4️⃣ Moorish Charm - Granada was the last Muslim kingdom in Spain, and you can feel its heritage in the Albaicín neighborhood, tea houses, and stunning architecture.

5️⃣ A City Full of Life - Thanks to its large university, Granada is full of culture, energy, and vibrant nightlife.
