Wine is such an old tradition on the territory of present day Romania, that it almost blends in the history of this region. People have been drinking wine for more than 2,700 years in this part of the world, and even though it has been in a strong competition with other less noble liquors, wine continues its profound relationship with people and it is present in all the important moments of life from the esoteric ones to traditional holidays.

Have you ever wondered which is the oldest bottle of wine in the world?

The Speyer wine bottle (or Römerwein) is a sealed vessel, presumed to contain liquid wine, and so named because it was unearthed from a Roman tomb found near Speyer, Germany. It is considered the world's oldest known bottle of wine.

The Speyer wine bottle most likely holds wine, and was originally found in 1867, in what is now the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany near Speyer, one of the oldest settlements in the area. The artifact has since become known as "the world's oldest existing bottle of wine". The bottle has been dated between 325 and 350 AD and is the oldest known unopened bottle of wine in the world. Since its discovery, it has been exhibited at the Wine Museum section of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer, always displayed in the same location within the museum.

The "Römerwein" is housed in the museum's Tower Room. It is a 1.5-litre (51 US fl oz) glass vessel with amphora-like "shoulders," yellow-green in color, with dolphin-shaped handles. 🍷

At the end of the 12th century, viticulture appears as a basic economic activity, under the protection of the state in Wallachia and Moldova, located on the territory of the old Dacia. Later, it will be discovered that, although all these territories are favorable for viticulture, there are, however, a number of regions, where a very special wine is produced. Such a place is the village of Purcari, whose vineyards were then owned by the Afon-Zograf Monastery.

In 1827, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia issues a Special Decree, following which in Purcari the first specialized winery in Bessarabia is established. It was named in honor of one of the founders of German origin, Harmizone. Since then owners of the Purcari Winery were the Moldavian boyars Dăncilă and Clot, but also Germans, Russians and French. Already in 1847, within the Bessarabian Agricultural Hierarchy, Purcari wine gets its first gold medal.

Purcari Winery Hotel is located in a picturesque rural area, 108 km from Chisinau. All rooms at the Purcari Winery are decorated in a chalet style and include a minibar. The property has 2 restaurants, which offer home-cooked meals and European cuisine. Guests can dine on the terrace and Purcari wines are offered at the bar. Guests of Hotel Winery can play tennis or fish in the lakes. The hotel also has a playground for children.

Both the winery and the hotel can be visited in one of the amazing Bacchus Tours! Join us!

The company Cramele Recaş represents one of the most important wineries in Romania, surely being the largest in the West of the country. With a long history (the first documentary attestation of the vineyards in Recaș dating back to 1447), starting in 1991, Cramele Recaș has been radically modernized as a result of the association between two vineyard engineers and a businessman in the international wine industry. Recaş wineries are today among the most complete wineries in the country, with a production focused primarily on quality at all levels of the range. They produce white, red and pink wines, awarded year after year with diplomas and medals at national and international competitions. Inside the Recaș Winemaking Complex there is a Tourist Cellar for groups organized with a capacity of serving over 100 people, where you can discover or rediscover all the types of wines that our company produces and bottles: they are the same wines that we export to more than 25 countries, including USA, Canada, Italy, France, Japan, Korea, Germany, Austria, UK, Sweden, Malaysia.

Located in the southwestern part of the country, in Mehedinți County, Corcova is a new vineyard for today's public, which continues the tradition of producing quality wine, initiated in this area several hundred years ago.

Corcova Roy & Dâmboviceanu wines are special and have that "gout du terroir", because here all the necessary elements meet: a temperate-continental climate with Mediterranean influences - hot and dry summers, mild winters, with accentuated precipitation; soils with a varied lithological structure and rich minerality, specific to the Piedmont of Motrului, part of the largest Piedmont unit in the country, the Getic Piedmont; the noble vine with the right varieties, provided by Pepinieres Hebinger and the careful and responsible work of the Corcova Roy & Dâmboviceanu team.

Since 2005, 55 hectares of land have been replanted with vines provided by Pepinieres Hebinger from France and varieties existing during the estate of the bibs - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc - as well as Feteasca Black. In addition, the wineries built by Prince Antoine Bibescu were completely restored between 2008 and 2009, respecting the original architecture, and equipped with winemaking machines produced by the most prestigious specialized companies in France and Italy.

Corcova Winery is a wonder, join the next Bacchus Tour to see it! You won't regret!

The making of wine starts with passion.
In 1998, that's how Vinarte started. People with different histories, but united by the passion for good wine, Romanians, French and Italians, have decided to build together a company that will bring good Romanian wines on everyone's lips.

The right place for wine.
The first step was the discovery of the best place. This is where the specialists identify not one, but three areas with an exceptional soil. The chance to create remarkable wines with distinct personalities convinced the associates to purchase three wine fields: Villa Zorilor - Dealu Mare; Bolovanu - Sâmburești and Stârmina - Mehedinți.

Every valuable thing is born with effort ..... and without compromises. Exceptional wines require only the best at each step. So they gave up the past, all that meant living hybrids and outdated machines. In their place they brought noble varieties of wines from France, stainless steel tanks, oak barrels, presses, filters and everything needed for an operation of such magnitude and with such an ambitious objective. And they made it!

A picture guide of how wine is made, from picking grapes to bottling wine.

Depending on the grape, the region and the kind of wine that a winemaker wishes to produce, the exact steps in the harvesting process will vary in time, technique and technology. But for the most part, every wine harvest includes these basic vine-to-wine steps:

🍷Pick the grapes
🍷Crush the grapes
🍷Ferment the grapes into wine
🍷Age the wine
🍷Bottle the wine

Here’s a photo guide of each of the steps of how wine is made from the moment the grapes are picked until the wine is put into bottles. Enjoy!👇
