DAY ONE OF LAZ 2026 SUMMER SCHOOL which entailed sessions on artificial intelligence in legal practice, cybersecurity and data protection, cross-border legal practice, and the sustainable lawyer, with a focus on performance, professional pressures and wellbeing.

A presentation on β€œThe Global Lawyer: Practising law in the COMESA region” was made by Ms Mutinta Chinganya Mulenga, Legal Officer of the CCJ. The presentation gave an overview of as an intergovernmental organization that promotes economic development and regional integration through trade and investment. It highlighted the mandate and jurisdiction of the COMESA Court of Justice and raised awareness on how lawyers in the COMESA region can enhance their legal practise beyond national borders through utilizing the COMESA legal system and representing clients in cross border litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution before the COMESA Court of Justice.

On 15th October 2026, the COMESA Court of Justice (CCJ) together with the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) will be hosting a webinar session under the theme β€œThe COMESA Court of Justice and regional legal practice for Zambian Lawyers”.

The session will be moderated by Mr Njavwa Sinkamba, LAZ council member in charge of International Relations and Scholarships. The Speakers will be Mrs Mutinta Chinganya Mulenga, Legal Officer of the CCJ and Hon. Asiimwe Anthony, Assistant Registrar of the CCJ.

The COMESA Court of Justice participated in the Twenty-Ninth Meeting of COMESA Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General held on 25 September 2026 in Lusaka, Zambia.

The Judge President, Honourable Justice Sitwala Mwanamwambwa, addressed the meeting and reflected on the progress made since the appointment of the Court's new Bench in May 2026. He noted that eleven Judges have already been sworn in and commenced their judicial duties, with the twelfth Judge expected to be sworn in during the upcoming COMESA Summit of Heads of State and Government in Harare, Zimbabwe.

His Lordship expressed appreciation to the COMESA Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General, the COMESA Secretary General, and the Registrar for their continued support of the Court and their commitment to upholding the rule of law and advancing regional integration. He reaffirmed the Court's mission to ensure the prompt and transparent determination of disputes through the highest standards of judicial excellence and administrative performance.

In concluding his remarks, the Judge President reaffirmed the Court's determination to remain a pillar of justice and regional integration within the COMESA region.

The COMESA Court of Justice, led by the Judge President, Honourable Justice Sitwala Mwanamwambwa, is participating in the 31st Meeting of the COMESA Committee on Legal Affairs held from 21–23 September 2026 in Lusaka, Zambia.

During the meeting, the Registrar, Honourable Woubishet Shiferaw (PhD), presented the Progress Report of the Court, highlighting key achievements, ongoing initiatives, and efforts undertaken to strengthen the Court's mandate in promoting the rule of law, regional integration, and access to justice within the COMESA region.

The Committee on Legal Affairs provides an important platform for reviewing legal and institutional matters of the Common Market and for enhancing cooperation among Member States and COMESA institutions.

The COMESA Court of Justice paid a courtesy call to the Chief Justice of Rwanda, aiming at benchmarking and collaborating in various aspects, including the use of technology, the measures put in place to avoid or to deal with backlog in courts.

Her Ladyship Honourable the President of the Supreme Court thanked the delegation and commended the idea of working together between the two courts. For rotational court sittings in COMESA Member States, Her Ladyship promised to give facilities to the CCJ when its court sessions will be held in Rwanda.

The delegation expressing their satisfaction to the Chief Justice of the Republic of Rwanda, the Government and the people of Rwanda. It also expressed the need of collaboration and benchmarking between the two institutions.

The COMESA Court of Justice participates at the 13th East Africa International Arbitration in Kigali, Rwanda.

The East Africa International Arbitration is being held from 17 to 18 September 2026, at Serana Hotel, Kigali, Rwanda with a theme β€œBridging Continents: Africa- Asia Perspectives on International Arbitration”.

The Conference was attended by delegates from many African national and regional Law Societies and from abroad, and other stakeholders from public and private sectors. On behalf the COMESA Court of Justice (CCJ) was Honourable Justice Dr Baroreraho Onesphore, Honourable Justice Ibrahim Hamid. Honourable Dr. Woubishet Shiferaw (the Registrar) and Honourable Ruboneza Philippe (the Deputy Registrar) attended the Conference.

During the opening session, the guest of honour Dr. Ugirashebuja Emmanuel, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Republic of Rwanda emphasised the Conference is not only aiming at bridging Africa - Asia as continents but to bridge the two continents in collaboration in respect of many aspects including arbitrations. He further, highlighted the role of using the Artificial Intelligence (AI) stressing that AI has to be used responsibly given that it is not a decision- maker, mentioning that fairness and justice remain the responsibility of the human being.

The topics elaborated in the Conference focused on Africa-Asia Business Ties and Current Trends, Anatomy of Asia-Africa Disputes, and at a topic on the Africa-Asia Arbitration Ecosystem: A Look at Seats of Arbitration. During different presentations it was realised that African Arbitrations are fragmented hence, there is a need to consolidate, coalize and strengthen African Arbitration Institutions.

Judges of the COMESA Court of Justice paid a courtesy visit to the Secretary General of COMESA. The discussion centred on deepening institutional collaboration whilst preserving the Court's independence.

Justice Monica Mugenyi, who led the delegation, emphasised the Court's gratitude for hosting the Court during arbitration proceedings. The Honourable Judges stressed that the spirit of cooperation between the COMESA Organs directly affects the stability and performance of the Court.

The Secretary General welcomed the visit and outlined the need for a permanent, cost-efficient solution for the Court's operations. She underscored that working in coalition makes the work easier for everyone involved, and expressed pride in the Court as an organ of the Common Market.
