We sat still by the lake, watching for wolves that we knew were nearby.

Then the forest on the far side began to move.

Two moose stepped out of the forest, looked at us – and swam across the lake in front of us. An unexpected highlight som the summer.

Behind the scenes: this trip took us a few winters to get right.

A few years ago we ran winter tracking tours in Dalarna. On wooden skis, the old way. We tested the idea over several winters, through different Secret Adventures.
The forest was magic. The skis were the problem.

We realised that many guests were afraid of skiing. Of not being good enough. So the skis had to go. Now it's snowshoes. Much easier to get started.

The second lesson was that the trip was too short. It was just a day trip. And many said the same thing: one day is not worth traveling to Dalarna for.

Fair enough. So we made it longer.

Now the trip is five days. And divided between two different areas.

First, Färnebofjärden National Park. Otter, white-tailed eagle, white-backed woodpecker – animals we don't usually focus on. Wolves spend time in the park in winter, so we hope to track and watch for them too.

Then we move into the hills of Dalarna. Into the forests where Marcus spends his own winter days, tracking moose, lynx and wolverine. A fantastic area. Very few people. Just white landscapes, and tracks.

One dilemma remains. The days are short, and the evenings are dark and long.

What do you do with all that dark hours?

Well, that's the best part of the day. You come in from the cold with snow on your boots. You warm up in the sauna – an ice bath for the brave. Then you sit down for a good dinner together.

Later: carving wood by the fire, talking about life and nature.

So after years of testing, piece by piece – now it's ready.

Last Sunday we wrapped up this year's secret bear expedition.

Three days in the mountain forest. Tracks, fire and silent scoping. We saw moose, ptarmigan and grouse – and at night, the sky turned this colorful.

And actually – two of our guests did see a bear. Far away, through binoculars, after the program had already ended.

That's how the forest works. It doesn't follow the script. But it always gives you something.

This was one of our Secret Adventures. The locations stay secret, the groups stay small. We will go again in autumn 2027 – send us a message if you want to know when the next one is released.

You may have seen that we recently launched a new winter journey in central Sweden: Tracks, Fire & Ice.

Over five days, we travel from the rapids and old forests around Gysinge to the snowy landscapes of Dalarna.

We search for wildlife tracks, walk on snowshoes, cook over an open fire and warm up in a sauna tent beside a frozen lake. Ice bathing is optional.

The days are active, but this is not a hard expedition. You do not need previous experience of tracking or snowshoeing, and we provide the equipment used during the activities.

Each evening, we return to a small countryside hotel with a warm room and private bathroom.

You can join on your own, as a couple or with a friend. With no more than seven guests, it is easy to get to know the others and share the experience with people who also enjoy wildlife, winter nature and time outdoors.

Getting here is easy too. The journey begins in Uppsala, with direct trains from Stockholm and Arlanda, and ends in Falun five days later.

This is Udden Retreat, about two hours from Stockholm and in one of Sweden’s best areas for wildlife. It is our base for many of our summer tours in central Sweden.

We pick up our guests at Arlanda and bring them here, to a small guesthouse beside a forest lake. During Wolves, Moose & Beavers, they stay here for three nights and spend one night in tents in wolf territory. After the night in the forest, we return to Udden for a shower and a good meal before the journey ends.

Between our wildlife excursions, there is time to swim, use the sauna, go for a walk or paddle a canoe. Beavers often swim past in the lake, while ospreys – and sometimes white-tailed eagles – fly overhead. The surrounding forests are also home to wolves and plenty of moose.

WildSweden has worked with Udden for around 15 years. For many years it was run by Eva and Allan, before Paulina and Janne took over a few years ago.

Paulina and Janne, pictured here with our guide Simon, take good care of our guests. They also prepare much of the food we bring with us and eat out in nature.

After all these years, Udden has become much more than somewhere to sleep. It is an important part of our summer journeys.

We have now opened bookings for summer 2027, and the first bookings are already coming in. Almost all our tours this summer were nearly fully booked well in advance, so it is a good idea to plan early if you would like to join us next year.

Gina only recently opened the 2027 dates for our most popular tour Wolves, Moose & Beavers – and several people have already booked.

It feels good to know that people are already planning to spend part of next summer with us in the forests of central Sweden.

Five days in a small group, looking for moose and beavers, cooking over the fire, swimming in forest lakes and spending a night in wolf territory – listening for howls in the dark.

The 2027 dates are now available on our website.

I'm dreaming of winter.

One of my favourite things to do in winter is to head into the forest after fresh snow and see who has been there before me.

On this day, my good friend Jakob came along with his camera while I went on skis. I stopped, as I usually do, at every interesting track we found.

Which animal was it? Where was it going? Was it alone? How old are the tracks?

On this day we came across tracks of wolverine, moose, pine marten and more.

Most wild animals notice us long before we notice them. We may not see the animal itself, but the snow tells us that it was there.

This is also a big part of our winter tours. We use snowshoes rather than skis, but we do the same thing: move slowly through the forest, look for tracks and try to understand what the animals have been doing.

We now have two winter tours in Sweden. One in central Sweden and one further north, around Jokkmokk. Both include snowy forests, wildlife tracking, good food and plenty of time outdoors.

We have been working on this tour for several winters. Testing different places, routes and activities, changing the programme and trying it again.

Now Tracks, Fire & Ice is ready – and open for bookings.

It is a five-day winter wildlife adventure in central Sweden. Together, we search the snowy forests for tracks of moose, wolves, lynx, wolverines and other wildlife.
We walk on snowshoes, cook local food over an open fire, carve wooden spoons and warm up in a sauna tent beside a frozen lake. Ice bathing is optional.

We wanted it to feel wild and active, without being a hard expedition. Each evening, we return to one of two comfortable countryside hotels.

Something new is coming.

For the past few years, we have been developing a completely new winter tour in central Sweden.

We have explored different places, tested ideas and gradually created the kind of winter experience we would like to join ourselves.

It will take place for the first time this winter – and we will reveal the full tour next week.

For now, here is a small glimpse of what is coming.
