Something new is coming.

For the past few years, we have been developing a completely new winter tour in central Sweden.

We have explored different places, tested ideas and gradually created the kind of winter experience we would like to join ourselves.

It will take place for the first time this winter – and we will reveal the full tour next week.

For now, here is a small glimpse of what is coming.

It was –32°C in Jokkmokk when our local guide Christian took the group out into the forest on snowshoes.

This was one of the coldest days of the journey. With proper winter clothing, a steady pace and regular stops, we could still spend time outside, looking for animal tracks and experiencing the snowy landscape.

Christian’s dog joined us too – and seemed to think it was a perfectly normal day.

Not every day is this cold. But this is real winter in Swedish Lapland, and sometimes the coldest days become the ones you remember most.

Summer is not over yet. But here are a few moments from our recent tours.

Days and nights outdoors. Quiet moments in the forest. Meals around the fire. Wildlife encounters, long summer evenings and new friendships.

Every tour has its own stories, and these photos only show a small part of what we have experienced together this summer.

Thank you to everyone who has joined us – and to all our guides and local hosts who make these adventures possible.

Linda described this as her most powerful moment of the season.

Our guide Linda and our volunteer Shannon had taken the group to a small forest lake in a part of the territory where wolves had been heard earlier.

On the way there, they spotted a moose. At the lake, two beavers swam past while wolves could be heard howling in the distance.

Later, as the group walked back towards the van in the dark, the wolves suddenly began to howl much closer. Linda thought at least one of them might have been only around 50 metres away at one point.

I like these dark and shaky videos where it feels like you are right there with them.

This is Shannon, our summer volunteer.

Shannon is originally from the USA but lives in Germany. This summer, she decided to spend a couple of months with us, and has been helping our guides before, during and after our tours.

She has also joined many of the trips to learn how we work – and along the way she has seen moose and beavers and heard wolves howling in the forest.

“Working for WildSweden has been an amazing adventure! I really needed this experience, and I feel even more connected to nature after my time here.”

Shannon will soon be heading home, so we want to take this opportunity to thank her for all her help. It has been great having you here!

Summer isn’t over yet.

In fact, late August and September are in many ways the best time of year for wildlife in Central Sweden.

The evenings are getting darker, wolves are often more vocal and the moose rut is getting closer. There is still plenty of activity in the forests and on the water.

Here are a few moments from this summer’s Wolves, Moose & Beavers journeys: moose and beavers, listening for wolves, paddling, forest walks, outdoor meals and hot saunas.

Our remaining scheduled departures this summer are fully booked, but you can still request a private trip on other dates.

This is Caisa, our local host in Jokkmokk, cooking over an open fire in the winter darkness.

For two nights of our winter journey, we stay with her in small cabins in the forest. The cabins have no electricity, and Cajsa cooks for us both indoors and outside. Several of the photos here are from evenings with her around the fire.

Looking through these photos, I realised that we rarely talk about our winter journeys as food journeys. But that is very much what they are.

We eat local ingredients such as reindeer and Arctic char. Much of the food is prepared by people who live here and know these places.

The food does not only come from the region. It is cooked out in the landscape. Over fire, in the snow, on the ice and beside small cabins in the forest.

The fire, the smoke, the winter darkness and the people around us all become part of the meal. Sometimes there are stars above us. Sometimes also northern lights.

Our six-day journey in Jokkmokk is a wildlife journey and a meeting with Sámi culture. But it is also very much a food journey in the Arctic.

This is the best time of year to hear wolves howl.

As the pups grow bigger, the wolf family becomes more active. We are now entering one of the most exciting parts of the season, when we spend our evenings listening – and also watching for wolves when the situation looks promising.

We have two last-minute places on our next Wolf Howling Experience tour, starting this Monday, 17 August.

During three days, we search for tracks, learn about the wolves and spend two evenings in an active wolf territory.

You stay for two nights at Färna Herrgård, with good food, a comfortable room and spa access between the evenings in the forest.

Filmed through a spotting scope by participants on earlier trips. Blurry and shaky.

But this is what seeing a wild bear can actually look like.

We scan the open mountain slopes, looking for something that moves. Then someone spots a bear in the distance, the spotting scopes come out, and everyone gets a closer look.

On 3–6 October, we return to our secret location during one of the best times of year to see bears feeding before winter. We meet the group in Sveg and take everyone into the mountains for a few days of camping and bear watching.

This is one of the best chances in Sweden to see a wild bear in its natural habitat.

The trip is guaranteed to run but we still have several places left.

It is a Secret Adventure, so you won’t find it on our website.
