Ocean Discovery Underwater 3D documentation for assets where getting it wrong isn't an option. Since 1995. Since 1999, the group has discovered over one hundred wrecks.

Ocean Discovery is closely associated to the highly respected organisation Global Underwater Explorers, GUE, and cooperate in numerous projects around the world. These projects are supported by GUE training, diving logistics and administrative support. ionally recognised "Ocean Discovery Exploration Team" has been involved since 1999 in an unprecedented marine archaeological survey project of the south east Baltic Sea. In 2011 the survey project culminated with Ocean Discovery´s divers locating the flagship Mars that sank in 1564. It has been called the marine archaeological find of the century. This does not mark the end of the project, but the beginning. Many years of exploration and documentation on this remarkable wreck lies ahead of us. The team is also heavily involved in international diving projects and Ocean Discovery divers have had a leading role in two expeditions to the Titanic’s sister ship, HMHS Britannic, to a depth of one hundred and twenty meters. Ocean Discovery video from the expedition has been broadcast by National Geographic, BBC, History Channel and the Discovery Channel. In 2001 Ocean Discovery worked for BBC´s series "Journeys to the bottom of the sea" filming the M1 experimental submarine in the English channel. The team has participated or led numerous successful projects since 1995. Ocean Discovery members also participate as speakers/presenters at many international seminars and events. Topics range from diving in general to archaeological explorations. In 2012 Ocean Discovery's Richard Lundgren was elected fellow member of the prestigious Explorers Club. This is a tremendous appreciation of a life time of underwater exploration culminating with the discovery of the ship wreck Mars.

Beneath the waters of the Baltic Sea lies HMS Cassandra.

In 2025, Ocean Discovery documented the wreck using high-resolution underwater photogrammetry, creating a detailed digital twin from more than 15,000 images. The project was carried out together with WAVES Group and JD-Contractor on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defence.

The attached image is a cinematic visualization based on real-world survey data from the project. Wreck geometry is derived from underwater photogrammetry; environmental effects have been digitally rendered.

A new, measurable picture of M/S Estonia.

In 2022, the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) commissioned us to document the wreck of M/S Estonia using photogrammetry. Around 45,000 high-resolution images were captured by ROV and compiled into a detailed 3D model — material that makes it possible to study the wreck's exterior and damage without disturbing the site.

When you see the images of more than five tonnes of ghost nets recovered from the wrecks Bruin, Magdalene, Molund and Östanhav, it becomes clear why projects like these are so important.

In 2024, Ocean Discovery carried out the initial documentation of the wrecks on behalf of the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. Using underwater photogrammetry, we created detailed 3D models of all four wrecks, which were later used to support the planning and ex*****on of the recovery operations carried out by JD-Contractor. Digital twin of the wreck Magdalene attached below.

The digital twins made it possible to study the wrecks in detail before work began, plan the operations, identify where the nets were entangled, and determine where they could be safely and efficiently cut free. The models also provided valuable situational awareness for the complex underwater recovery campaign.

The results speak for themselves:

• More than 5 tonnes of lost fishing gear recovered
• Multiple seals found entangled in the nets
• Environmentally hazardous oil identified in two of the wrecks

This is a clear example of how digital twins and real-world survey data can provide better decision support, safer operations, and tangible environmental benefits.

Congratulations to JD-Contractor for the successful recovery operation, and many thanks to the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and everyone else involved in the project.
