In the middle of Lake Navardalen, deep in the wilderness of northern Dalarna, floats one of the most extraordinary places to sleep in all of Sweden. Raven is No Connection’s signature accommodation - a glass-walled houseboat anchored far from any road, reachable only by raft, 30 km from the nearest village.
Check-in is part of the adventure: no front desk, just a raft across the still lake, met by founder Lina Karlsson and the team as the outside world falls away.
Built for two, Raven offers 47 sqm of space, with a glazed 27 sqm cabin, a double bed beneath open sky, a rooftop wood-fired sauna, outdoor shower, and terrace kitchen. No electricity beyond a few lights, no wifi, no phone signal - just an incineration toilet and a rowing boat at the door.
With a minimum two-night stay, one dinner is typically served right on the lodge — a chef-prepared, multi-course meal from local, seasonal ingredients and hunter-sourced meat, and a second at No Connection’s restaurant on land, a former 1960s STF wilderness hostel. Guests choose where to dine each night. By day, guided waterfall safaris, canoeing, and wildlife spotting; by night, total stillness under an untouched sky.
Every detail on board is handpicked, much of it restyled from flea markets and second-hand finds - giving Raven the feel of a living work of art. Total disconnection from the world, total reconnection with each other.

Fulufjället National Park spans nearly 460 square kilometers together with its Norwegian counterpart, making it one of Sweden’s wildest protected areas - a landscape of open fjäll plateau, deep gorges, and ancient pine forest. Its star attraction is Njupeskär, Sweden’s highest free-falling waterfall, plunging around 93 meters down a dramatic cliff face. The park is also home to Old Tjikko, believed to be one of the world’s oldest living trees at over 9,500 years.
The trail to the waterfall winds gently through old-growth pine forest, moss-covered boulders, and quiet birch groves, with the sound of the river growing louder as you climb - it feels almost like walking through a wild, open-air botanical garden. It’s an easy, family-friendly walk — around 2 km each way on wide, well-maintained boardwalks and gravel paths, taking roughly 30–45 minutes one way — and since 2026, a newly accessibility-adapted section also lets visitors with wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers reach the falls. As the trail nears the end, the terrain opens up to reveal the thundering water of Njupeskär crashing down - a rewarding, ever-changing walk from dense woodland into raw mountain drama, suited to everyone from young children to seasoned hikers.

Once we reach Lillvallen, an authentic fäbod tucked deep in this wilderness, it’s hard to put into words what it feels like to be truly cut off from civilization - no roads, no signal, just forest, mountain, and silence in every direction. Its history stretches back to a time when families lived here each summer, and standing there, one question lingers: how did anyone build this infrastructure, and clear this land into usable soil, without machines or modern tools? Impressive doesn’t begin to cover it.
Peter builds a fire and prepares reindeer entrecôte over open flame, serving bone marrow straight from the coals - Sami cooking tradition passed down through his family, rich with flavor and story alike. There’s something special about eating food cooked this way, with nothing but fire and mountain silence around you.
There’s no electricity here, no running water - just fire, candlelight, and stillness. Peter lights the hearth before nightfall, and we settle into the fäbod for the night, sleeping by candlelight alone. After a long day on the mountain, sleep comes easily - deep, quiet, and complete.
Morning arrives early, with Peter already preparing breakfast before we set off again. Before the hike back, there’s one last ritual: a cold plunge in the lake, sharp and bracing - the perfect send-off from Lillvallen. For those who want to end differently, the return can also be made by helicopter, a stunning aerial farewell over the very fjäll we’d just walked across.

Our journey begins at Renbiten, a Sami family business run by Peter and Helena Andersson in Grövelsjön, part of Idre Sameby - the southernmost Sami community in Sweden. We’re welcomed into the reindeer enclosure, where we learn these gentle, social flock animals neither bite nor kick, before hand-feeding them lichen, moss, and leaves straight from our palms - a calm, memorable first step into Sami reindeer culture.
From there, Peter leads us up onto Långfjället itself, hiking from Lövåsen toward Lillvallen across open mountain terrain. The scenery is nothing short of breathtaking - behind us, the Norwegian mountains rise on the horizon, with Rendalssølen, ”The Sleeping Queen,” resting in silhouette among them, while ahead, Städjan and the surrounding peaks stretch out in every direction, a full panoramic sweep of Dalarna’s wildest terrain. Every step becomes a lesson: Peter points out plants, tracks, and creatures most would walk straight past, sharing knowledge passed down through generations of Sami herding. Above us, on these same slopes, reindeer roam free through their summer grazing season - feeding on fresh grasses and herbs, calves taking their first steps across the open fjäll.
Hours pass beneath open sky, the landscape shifting with every ridge we cross, until finally Lillvallen comes into view - a remote, authentic fäbod tucked deep in this wilderness, cut off from the rest of the world.

Elle Nikishkova’s story spans continents before it ever reaches the forest floor of Dalarna. Raised between Ukraine, Cuba, and Sweden, her multicultural upbringing shaped the palate and curiosity that made her one of Sweden’s most sought-after outdoor chefs - known nationwide for open-fire cooking and a deep connection to wild, foraged food.

Marianne grew up in Mora but left for Stockholm, building a successful career before eventually founding her own PR agency. Somewhere along the way, a deep pull back to the forest and the childhood landscape she’d left behind became impossible to ignore. That longing became Myrängsgården - an abandoned 1729 farmstead, untouched since the 1940s, which she restored piece by piece into her own private masterpiece.
Step through the doors and you enter something closer to a labyrinth than a hotel - five interconnected log houses joined by a 14-metre traditional dining hall, every corner hiding a new discovery. Walking through feels like stepping into a real-life Antikrundan - every object hand-picked and collected by Marianne herself, a hundred stories quietly living under one roof. It’s a place that has quietly welcomed some of Sweden’s most familiar faces, from hockey legend Börje Salming, who returned every year to celebrate with family, to artist Molly Sandén — and it’s here that the beloved Swedish Christmas TV production Fixarjulen is filmed, with Malin Olsson.
Your stay begins with a welcome drink, before the choice is yours: a horse-drawn carriage ride through the forest, a torchlit sledge in winter, a hands-on baking course, or simply time to slow down and relax. As evening falls, everyone gathers in the main room for dinner — home-cooked, generous, and personal, prepared either by Marianne herself or a private chef.
When the night winds down, there’s the lakeside sauna to steam away the day, or a hot tub under open sky, before sinking into a comfortable bed. For Marianne, Myrängsgården is more than a place to stay, it’s a way to lift and preserve the local culture of Mora, one story, one guest, and one handpicked object at a time.

Based in Sågmyra, in the deep forest of Dalarna, Måseks is home to a pack of 16 huskies and run by owners Annika and Pär Jansson, both competitive mushers with multiple championship wins in dog sledding - gold, silver, and bronze. Deep beneath the UNESCO World Heritage town of Falun lies one of the world’s oldest continuously worked mines — over a thousand years of tunnels, shafts, and chambers carved by hand into solid rock. Mining began here as early as 850 AD, and what started as a scattered dig grew into the industrial engine that built Sweden’s wealth, funded its wars, and painted its houses red.
You’ll descend into the mountain itself, walking the same passages miners once lit only by tar torches, past cave-ins, forgotten work chambers, and the towering headframe of Creutz schakt, plunging 208 metres straight down. Along the way, guides bring the mine’s brutal, fascinating history to life — the Great Collapse of 1687, the 629 miners lost between 1664 and 1770 alone, and the legend of Gruvfrun, the mythical guardian spirit miners still knock three times for before entering, out of respect for those who never made it back up.
Above ground, the crater Stora Stöten stretches nearly a mile in circumference, an unmissable scar left by centuries of extraction — and it’s the very same reddish sludge seeping from these walls that became Falu Rödfärg, the iconic red paint now covering countryside houses across all of Sweden.
There’s nowhere else in the world quite like it — a mine that shaped a nation, waiting just beneath your feet. This isn’t a museum. It’s a genuine descent into Sweden’s industrial soul.
