📦 Shipment Spotlight: Navigating IPPC Compliance Between USA and Singapore

Last month, we managed a shipment from the United States to Singapore that presented an interesting challenge around wood packaging compliance.

After securing the shipment, our U.S. agent coordinated pickup with the shipper, who confirmed the cargo was packed in a carton box and secured on a wooden pallet.

However, the pallet lacked the IPPC heat treatment (HT) stamp — a potential red flag under international shipping standards.

While Singapore does not require wooden pallets to be heat treated or fumigated as long as they are clean, dry, and free from mould, we instructed our agent to verify acceptance with both U.S. Customs and the airline to ensure smooth transit.

Once confirmation was received from the airline, we proceeded without delay — and the shipment was successfully delivered to our customer without issue.

This experience reaffirmed the importance of:

📞 Maintaining close communication across all parties
🔍 Performing due diligence to eliminate ambiguity

A cautionary tale in freight handling: glass wool blankets are no joke.

Last week, our transporter handled a shipment labeled innocuously as “glass wool blankets.”

What seemed like a standard job turned into an unexpected health hazard—one of our handlers ended up with painful micro cuts and skin irritation just from contact with the material.

Turns out, these “blankets” are made of fine fiberglass—thousands of hair-thin shards that can cause *serious* discomfort on skin exposure. The itch quickly becomes inflammation.

Worse still, the fibers can become airborne, posing respiratory risks if inhaled.

This experience was a stark reminder:

- **Know your cargo.** Always confirm what’s inside beyond the trade name.

- **Don’t skimp on PPE.** Gloves, long sleeves, and masks aren’t optional with fiberglass.

- **Packaging matters.** Tear-resistant, sealed wrapping makes all the difference.

At a time when speed often trumps scrutiny, let’s not forget: safety is not a luxury—it’s a discipline.

Not every shipment run smooth as silk.

Sometimes, shipments get diverted to the scanning station by the Customs officer.

Very recently, I am lucky enough to encounter 2 cases within the same week.

There are many reasons why the shipments get flagged for scanning and one of it is security.

While these situations can delay operations, they serve as reminders of the importance of being prepared for the unexpected in logistics.

Keeping accurate documentation and maintaining strong communication with our business partners is our key to resolve any issues in the process of handling our shipments.
