BIG PENGUIN HUGS for Northern Offshore Services for the grand naming ceremony of their first I-Class Crew Transfer Vessel, M/V Impresser, at Donsö, Sweden.

Impresser is the FIRST commercial ship in the world to be fitted with Volvo Penta at Sea's IPS Professional Platform, powered by IPS40 drives.

Volvo Penta's IPS Professional Platform is unique because it is a truly compact, efficient and modular hybrid-electric platform that enables Impresser to be easily converted from diesel to hybrid to full electric propulsion.

Beyond the innovative propulsion train, Impresser itself is based on a brand new CTV design that was developed in-house by NOS, with Penguin as the supporting builder and Incat Crowther as the supporting designer. This new 34m platform offers world-class endurance, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.

I'M LIVIN' THE ELECTRIC DREAM: Today, 17 April 2023, marks the unveiling of Singapore's first pure electric seagoing ship, Penguin Refresh, a 200-pax, 21-knot electric commuter ferry that would ply between Pasir Panjang Ferry Terminal and Shell's Energy and Chemicals Park on Pulau Bukom.
Dubbed Electric Dream by Penguin, this project comprises three electric ferries and rapid shore chargers with automated jibs on Pulau Bukom.
Penguin is the turnkey designer, builder, owner and operator of the ferries and charging infrastructure. Special thanks to Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Ltd, Incat Crowther, Razor Blunt Labs, Danfoss Asia Pacific Zinus AS and Gema Engineering.
In a speech at the unveiling event on Pulau Bukom, Penguin's Executive Chairman Jeffrey Hing said, "This project presented itself as a bold challenge against all that was conventional and comfortable in our local maritime industry.
For us, this was going to be our most substantial and most profound investment ever in a single project."
Mr Hing ended his 5-minute speech by sharing a personal snippet: "I applied for a job in Shell some 40 years ago, I did not get a reply back. Setbacks are part and parcel of life’s journey. Setbacks are set-ups to build you up, if you don’t give up.
So it is with Penguin on this Electric Dream journey. We weathered the Covid regime, supply chain delays and impasse with government agencies over charging infrastructure. By God’s Grace, we prevailed."
Penguin Refresh will start commercial operations in May. She will be joined by two more ferries later this year.
Together, our three Electric Dream ferries will eliminate more than 6,000 tons of CO2 annually from the skies over Singapore. That is the annual emission from three conventional ferries.

KEEP CALM AND ELECTRIFY THIS!
Penguin has won an international tender by Shell to design, build, own and operate pure electric ferries and shore chargers for Shell’s Energy and Chemicals Park on Pulau Bukom, Singapore.

This is a first for Penguin, Shell and Singapore.

Scheduled to commence in 2023, the long-term charter will comprise a minimum of three pure electric ferries - each with a capacity of 200 pax on a single deck, 1.2 MWh of batteries and a cruising speed of over 20 knots - transporting more than 3,000 pax a day (or 1.8 million pax a year) between Pasir Panjang Ferry Terminal and Pulau Bukom. The new ferries will replace a fleet of conventional diesel-powered ferries.

Penguin’s scope of works also includes designing, installing and operating ultra-fast shore chargers on Pulau Bukom that are capable of recharging each ferry in under 10 minutes.

This fully privately funded project is codenamed Electric Dream by Penguin and our project partners, Incat Crowther (https://www.incatcrowther.com/) and Razor Blunt Labs (https://www.razorblunt.com/).

Electric Dream is the latest milestone in Penguin’s decarbonisation journey:
Nov 2018 : Solar retrofit of a passenger ferry Penguin Redeem
Apr 2021 : Delivery of Singapore’s first hybrid-electric harbourcraft boat Penguin Tenaga
1H2022 : Delivery of a hybrid-electric patrol boat to a Singapore-based client
1H2023 : Delivery of Electric Dream ferries
