Mastercard files 15 metaverse and NFT related trademarks. Mastercard joins Visa and American Express with moves into the Metaverse as it seeks to increase revenue streams and remain competitive in the virtual economy.

Highlights of the filings include plans for a virtual community for interacting with digital assets, the processing of payment cards in the Metaverse, an online marketplace for buyers and sellers of downloadable digital goods, virtual reality events and more.

As previously reported by Cointelegraph, Mastercard added 500 new hires in February to consult with banks and merchants about adopting crypto-enabled technologies and NFTs.

Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary breaks down his crypto portfolio and explains how his metaverse bets are based on the economics of Web3.

As there are currently 11 sectors of the S&P 500, most experts typically advise putting no more than 20% in any one sector, and no more than 5% in any one stock.

O'Leary applies that strategy to his crypto portfolio and predicts crypto, blockchain, and innovative financial services will become the S&P 500's 12th sector within a decade. Now, he holds 32 positions in the digital asset sector, including solana, bitcoin, and blockchain firm Polygon. No single position takes up more than 5% of the allotted 20%, he explained.

"If you believe there's long-term economic value in software, then you can give it a 5% weighting within your operating mandate. My larger positions are ones I think look like a great economic proposition."

British Chancellor Rishi Sunak has instructed the Royal Mint to create a non-fungible token (NFT) later this year as an “emblem” of the UK’s goal to become a “global cryptoasset technology hub”.

The UK Treasury said on Twitter: This decision shows the forward-looking approach we are determined to take towards cryptoassets in the UK.”

The UK will not be the first nation to adopt some form of official blockchain technology. Since its surge in popularity, several governments have entered the world of crypto, including Lithuania, which issued the world’s first state-backed digital collectable coin in 2020.

Last year, El Salvador made Bitcoin legal tender in a move that sparked protests and saw Bitcoin ATMs set on fire. Earlier this year, Ukraine announced its plans to issue NFTs of its own as part of a fundraising effort to help deal with the invasion from the Russian military.

Billionaire Paypal co-founder Peter Thiel has compiled a list of bitcoin’s enemies, the “finance gerontocracy” he said is stopping the price of the cryptocurrency from soaring 100x. Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett tops the list. Thiel called him “the sociopathic grandpa of Omaha.” 🤣🤣🤣

Thiel further noted that Buffett has a bias that makes him long on the fiat money system, and money managers who follow the Berkshire Hathaway executive’s advice will pretend it is complicated to invest in bitcoin.

The next person on the list of bitcoin’s enemies is JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. Thiel put Dimon’s picture up with a quote: “I don’t call them cryptocurrencies, I called them crypto tokens because currencies have rules of law behind them, central banks and tax with authorities.”

The metaverse could have a digital population of as many as five billion people with an economy of up to $13tn (£9.9tn) by 2030, according to US financial services firm Citi.

Speaking at a discussion on the future of the metaverse at the Innovate Finance Global Summit in London, Sophia Bantanidis, head of strategy policy at Citi, explained to metaverse sceptics why the nascent technology is the next generation of the internet – and more than just virtual reality.

The nature of what money is, however, is expected by Citi to be different when looking at the metaverse’s future economy and will heavily involve digital financial assets like cryptocurrencies, NFTs and other future blockchain ventures.

“To make the vision of the metaverse a reality, we expect significant investment in a confluence of technology.”

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon sees decentralized finance (defi) and blockchain as real, new technologies that can be deployed in both private and public fashion. The Bitcoin critic acknowledged the value of decentralised finance (DeFi) and blockchain technologies in his most recent annual letter to JP Morgan shareholders.

Dimon is known to be a harsh critic of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. He declared Bitcoin a “fraud” in 2017 and said it is “worthless” in October 2021. Dimon’s optimistic view on blockchain contrasts sharply with his public disdain of Bitcoin.

Even after JPMorgan began offering some crypto-related products to clients, Dimon has not warmed up to cryptocurrencies, while praising decentralised finance and blockchain technologies.

According to a JPMorgan report published last week, there is little upside for crypto markets. However, in February, the business anticipated that the long-term price of Bitcoin would reach $150,000.

The Kevin O'Leary Bitcoin Keynote at Bitcoin 2022 Conference.

Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary, aka Mr. Wonderful, has predicted that trillions of dollars will flow into cryptocurrencies, particularly bitcoin. In addition, he said bitcoin mining will “save the world.”

He said that based on his experience in the indexing business, “massive pools of capital, these trillion-dollar pools” are waiting for policy. They currently own zero or very little crypto. “It’s the purvey of high net worth individuals, hedge funds, and retail investors,” he clarified.

“So for those of us that can invest in it now, you are going to get ahead of what’s going to be a huge wave of interest when policy occurs,” he added.

Mr. Wonderful went on to say that "I predict in the next 10 years that crypto, blockchain, bitcoin — all of this innovation — will be the 12th sector of the S&P."

There’s a momentum in the crypto market that is self-fulfilling, says Bridgewater’s Patterson.

With the war in Ukraine, we're seeing a lot of money going into Ukraine in the form of crypto, while Russians are sending money out of the country in the form of crypto. This conflict in Ukraine has certainly highlighted and accelerated the growth of crypto, especially when CBDC (Central-Bank Backed Digital Currency) is not as liquid as thought.

Cryptocurrencies are now viewed more like a tech stock or emerging class asset than some speculative instrument viewed with tainted glasses.

The DAO is a major concept for 2022 and will disrupt many industries.

The blockchain and cryptocurrency rave is not ending anytime soon. And as more people are being introduced to revolutionary technologies in the digital space, new improvements upon these technologies are also being introduced. It is not yet clear where these disruptive technologies will lead us, but we are sure that there will be much value up for grabs.

Using both social building and governance, the decentralized autonomous organization disruption is a notch higher. The DAO is one major invention that is challenging current systems of governance. Utilizing NFTs, DAOs are changing our perspective of how organizations and systems should be run, and they put further credence to the idea that the optimal form of governance does not have to do with hierarchical structures.

South Korean crypto market grows to $45.9B in 2021 despite strict regulations.

South Korea is considered among the strictest crypto markets in terms of regulatory policy implementations and made regular headlines throughout 2021 for its new Travel Rule and Know Your Customer requirements. However, the Korean crypto market has bloomed to new heights despite the regulatory scrutiny in 2021.

The FSC report published by The Korea Herald suggests there are a total of 15.3 million registered crypto exchange users, out of which only 5.58 million people participated in trading in 2021. Out of these 5.58 million crypto users, nearly 3.1 million users hold crypto assets worth less than 1 million won ($850), while 15% of the traders hold virtual assets worth more than 10 million won ($8,500).
