Walking on nature’s red carpet at Hitachi Seaside Park!

October transforms Hitachi Seaside Park into a breathtaking autumn wonderland. The famous kochia bushes gradually change from green to brilliant crimson, creating what feels like a spectacular red carpet stretching across the hills.

But there’s so much more than kochia and flowers! The park is a wonderful place to spend a whole day, with cycling paths, walking trails, outdoor activities, playgrounds, amusement rides, and plenty of beautiful spots to relax and enjoy nature.

You can explore the vast park by bicycle, take a leisurely walk through the different gardens, enjoy the seasonal scenery, or simply find a peaceful spot to take in the views.

And getting here from Tokyo is quite easy! The journey to Katsuta Station takes around 85 minutes by JR Limited Express, followed by about a 15-minute bus ride to the park. So it makes a very enjoyable day trip from Tokyo.

Flowers, autumn colors, cycling, nature and fun — Hitachi Seaside Park has something for everyone!

Definitely a place worth putting on your Japan itinerary.

Exploring the Countryside of Central Japan with the JR Takayama-Hokuriku Pass!

Looking to explore a different side of Japan beyond the usual Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route? The JR Takayama-Hokuriku Pass is a great option for discovering beautiful countryside, historic towns, traditional villages, and cities along the way.

⏰ Do note that this is a 5-day pass, so it’s worth planning your itinerary carefully to make the most of the five consecutive days.

One of the great things about this pass is that there are quite a few towns and cities you can visit along the route. You can travel from Nagoya towards the Hokuriku region and end your journey in Kyoto or Osaka — or travel in reverse.

Some places you can consider include:

🏯 Takayama – Wander through charming old streets, traditional wooden houses and local markets, and enjoy the famous Hida beef.

🏔️ Gokayama & Ainokura – Discover traditional Gassho-zukuri houses surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Ainokura is generally quieter and less touristy than the more famous Shirakawa-go, making it a wonderful place to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.

🌉 Takaoka – A historic city known for traditional crafts, temples, and rich cultural heritage.

And these are just a few of the possibilities! There are other towns and cities along the route that you can add depending on your interests and how you want to spend your five days.

Nagoya → Takayama → Gokayama/Ainokura → Takaoka → Hokuriku → Kyoto/Osaka

Or travel in reverse!

The best part is the journey itself — scenic mountains, rivers, small towns, traditional villages, and beautiful countryside along the way.

GUJO HACHIMAN — A HIDDEN GEM IN THE MOUNTAINS OF GIFU

You may have been to Nagoya, Takayama, or even Gifu — but you may have missed this charming little town called Gujo Hachiman.

Nestled in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Gujo Hachiman is a beautiful castle town known for its traditional streets, crystal-clear waterways, and its famous summer festival — Gujo Odori.

💃🕺 Held over several weeks during the summer, Gujo Odori is one of Japan’s most famous Bon dance festivals. Night after night, the town comes alive with traditional music and dancing, with locals and visitors joining together in the streets.

And even if you missed the festival itself, you can still experience a taste of Gujo Odori at the Gujo Hachiman Museum, where you can learn about the history and traditions of the festival and watch a live demonstration of the Gujo Odori dance. It’s a wonderful way to experience the spirit of the festival, even outside the summer season.

Wander through the historic streets by day, discover the town’s clear waterways, visit the hilltop castle, and soak in the charm of this beautiful old town.

Onomichi — a little town tucked away in Hiroshima Prefecture, waiting for you to discover.

And it’s surprisingly easy to get here! You can reach Onomichi by train from Okayama Station or Hiroshima Station, making it a great day trip or stopover.

Away from the usual tourist trails, Onomichi feels like a place where time moves a little slower.

🐈 Cat Alley — Neko no Hosomichi
Wander through narrow hillside lanes filled with cats, old wooden houses, little cafés and quirky cat decorations. Every corner feels like a small discovery.

⛩️ Senkoji Temple
Head up the hill for beautiful views over Onomichi and the Seto Inland Sea. Take your time walking back down through the winding temple paths and old neighbourhood streets.

🛍️ Hondori Shopping Street
One of the most nostalgic parts of Onomichi. This covered shopping arcade feels like time has stopped in the Showa era.

Old signboards, weathered shopfronts, traditional stores, tiny cafés and long-established family businesses create an atmosphere that feels wonderfully unchanged.

It doesn’t feel like a recreated retro street.

It feels real — a living piece of old Japan.

Due to the rising cost in Japan, Japan Railway will be revising its JR nationwide Pass price from October 1, 2026.

If you're traveling to Japan between October 1 and December 30, consider getting the JR nationwide pass at the lower price now.

The last date to purchase is September 30. Note that the exchange voucher will be valid for 90 days from the date of issuance (e.g., if issued on September 30, the last exchange date will be December 30).

You can set the pass validity to start on December 31 or up to a month from the exchange date. Get your JR nationwide pass from us now before the price increase.
