Functionality Study – a redundant process for 3PL Warehouse Management System

Functionality study is a must for the development of a customized system and a need for a private warehouse system (WMS).
However, for a 3PL WMS, functionality study is a waste of resources and efforts as the requirement of each client of a warehouse is likely to be different from the others. If the vendor insists on the study, it would be necessary to conduct as many studies as the number of clients the warehouse have.
Instead efforts and resources are best focus on training and learn the configuration setup of the system.
With well-designed mature 3PL WMS, it can be expected that the system is flexible and configurable to meet the various industries warehouse operational requirement that it is designed for.
This does not mean that a good 3PL WMS will not require any customization. Customization will likely arise in the area of reports and services as this vary from client to client required rather that operational needs. Other potential enhancement is likely to a new field here and there – which are typically minor adjustment.
Furthermore, a 3PL WMS that incorporate an off-the-shelf reports writer, like Crystal Reports, will enable user to at least modify and adjust existing template, thereby reducing ownership and operating of the WMS.

TOY R US - What implication for Online Marketplace?

Today online shoppers typically go window shopping at brick and mortar retail outlets - find what they want, their quality and prices. And then go online and make the purchases.

With the retail outlet falling like flys, wonder where the shoppers will go to look and feel their wants before buying.

Online marketplace retailer are keeping their cost down by relying on their brick and morter to provide showrooms to their potential customers.

With the brick and mortar closing their outlets, wonder who will provide the 'showroom' services. If it is the manufacturers, then they would be marking their prices to cover the costs. This would level the playfield between the online and brick and mortar.

Without the 'showroom', demand for an item online is likely to drop give their drop in exposure. Additianal advertisement and promotion is likely to be needed to maintain the exposure - which will translate to direct marketing costs to the manufacturers and distributors.

Day seems to be arriving for the online retailers to foot the real business costs!
