France Rocked by Mass Protests as Hundreds of Thousands Rally Against Macron Government
On October 17–18, 2026, an estimated 550,000 to 800,000 people took to the streets across France to protest against the policies of President Emmanuel Macron’s government.
Demonstrations took place in more than 110 marches nationwide, including in Paris. The government estimated that 550,000 people participated, while organizers put the figure at 800,000.
Why Are People Protesting?
1. Rising Cost of Living: Fuel, food, and other essential goods have become more expensive, while incomes have failed to keep pace with rising expenses.
2. Economic Inequality: Some citizens believe government policies disproportionately benefit the wealthy.
3. Problems in the Education System: Students are demanding more teachers and improved school conditions.
4. Declining Public Services: Citizens are concerned about government spending, social welfare, and pension provisions.
5. Anger Over Police Use of Force: Reports of young people suffering serious injuries during clashes with police have fueled public anger.
How Serious Is the Situation?
1. Most demonstrations remained peaceful, but violent clashes broke out in some areas.
2. Cars were set on fire, shops were looted, and government buildings were vandalized.
3. Limoges City Hall was reportedly set on fire, sustaining extensive damage.
4. According to the latest reports, more than 1,200 people have been arrested, and at least 150 police officers have been injured.
Who Is Leading the Protests?
The movement involves a broad coalition of students, young people, labor unions, teachers, ordinary citizens, and the Yellow Vests movement.
The protests reflect mounting public frustration over the cost of living, economic inequality, social welfare, and the French government’s handling of national affairs. The large-scale demonstrations have intensified political pressure on Macron’s government.
