The Maroon culture in Suriname—often referred to as one of the best-preserved pieces of African heritage in the Americas—is a vibrant, distinct culture forged by self-liberated Africans (Maroons, or Marrons).

Beginning in the 17th and 18th centuries, enslaved people escaped from coastal Dutch plantations into the dense rainforests of the interior.
​By learning to navigate the rainforests, forming alliances with Indigenous peoples, and waging guerrilla warfare against colonial forces, they forced the Dutch colonial government to sign historic peace treaties (starting with the Ndyuka treaty on October 10, 1760).

This granted them legal freedom and territorial autonomy long before the general abolition of slavery in 1863.
