โ ๏ธ Doctors warn, RUTF is medicine, not food
Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is a medical treatment designed to save the lives of children under five years old suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Despite its peanut butterโlike appearance, it is not a snack and should never be given to healthy children or consumed casually by adults.
Why Adults Should Not Eat RUTF
1. Excessive calories and nutrients
RUTF is carefully formulated to meet the urgent needs of severely malnourished children. For healthy adults, consuming it can overwhelm the body, putting stress on the liver, kidneys, and digestive system.
2. Risk of chronic diseases
Prolonged or inappropriate use can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure since the product is not designed for long-term or healthy consumption.
3. Depriving children in need
Supplies of RUTF are limited. When adults or healthy individuals consume it, they reduce availability for children whose survival depends on these sachets.
RUTF is a Prescription, Not a Snack
Just as no one would take malaria medication simply because it tastes sweet, RUTF must only be used for its intended medical purpose. It is a specialized treatment, not a substitute for regular meals.
The Right Choice
Leave RUTF for the children who desperately need it. Adults should instead focus on balanced diets that provide all necessary nutrients, including:
- Healthy fats
- Lean meats, chicken, and fish
- Vegetables and fruits
- Whole grains
- Plant and animal proteins
In markets and communities where RUTF is distributed, it should never be misused as a casual snack. Its purpose is lifesaving treatment for the most vulnerable, and respecting that role helps ensure every sachet reaches the children who depend on it.
