Long before the Caribbean became the region we know today, Indigenous peoples were building communities and ways of life shaped by the land and its natural bounty. Their presence remains an important part of OUR Caribbean story.

September gives us a special opportunity to celebrate that heritage. Guyana observes Indigenous Heritage Month, with cultural activities throughout September, while Dominica celebrates Kalinago Week, shining a light on the traditions and living culture of the Kalinago Territory and their people.

Two destinations, distinct Indigenous cultures, and stories that continue to shape OUR Caribbean today.

If you are booked for a flight to these destinations this month these local activities are worth checking out!

The heat is on across OUR Caribbean, and there’s no better way to cool down than with an ice-cold waternut.

In Barbados, you’ll find them stacked at roadside stalls, ready to crack open for a refreshing drink that’s been keeping Bajans cool for generations. Simple, natural, and exactly what a hot day calls for.

It’s one of those little island experiences you just have to enjoy for yourself.

Long before modern plates and bowls, the calabash was already part of everyday life across the Caribbean. Crafted from the dried shell of the calabash fruit, it has been used for generations to serve meals, drinks, and bring Caribbean people together around the table.

That tradition continues today. A handcrafted calabash might accompany a meal in the British Virgin Islands, appear at a cultural dining experience in Dominica's Kalinago Territory, or be found in local communities throughout Saint Lucia and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

It's a simple reminder that some of the Caribbean's richest traditions are still part of everyday life.
