Back to Takayama

We returned to Takayama once again—
the last time we were here, it happened to coincide with the Takayama Festival, one of Japan’s biggest annual events.
It was fun and festive, but a little too busy for our taste.
So this time, we chose to come back for a quieter visit and spend a peaceful night in town.

This return trip allowed us to leisurely explore the Old Town district,
and visit the Miyagawa Morning Market, where we found all sorts of local snacks and treats.

And yes—we finally got to try the famous Hida beef,
a top-quality local specialty that truly lived up to its reputation.

But there was one particular spot we’d been eyeing for a long time:
Miyagawa Ryokuchi Park, a riverside park that runs alongside the Miyagawa River.
We had driven past it several times and always admired how beautiful it looked,
lined with rows of cherry blossom trees stretching along the water.

This park is known as a quiet, uncrowded cherry blossom spot,
and this time, we made it happen—we brought our picnic and spent hours just relaxing, walking, and enjoying the scenery.

It was one of those simple, slow days that end up becoming one of your favorite memories.
We almost spent the whole day there—and we don’t regret a minute of it.

รอบนี้เราเลยเลือกกลับมาใหม่ในช่วงที่ เมืองเงียบสงบ
พักอีกหนึ่งคืนแบบสบาย ๆ ทำให้ได้เดินเล่นใน ย่านเมืองเก่า ได้เต็มที่
รวมถึงได้ไปเดิน Miyagawa Morning Market ตลาดเช้าริมน้ำที่มีของกินมากมาย

รอบนี้เราได้กินของที่เล็งไว้ตั้งแต่รอบก่อน
คือ เนื้อฮิดะ (Hida Beef) เนื้อวัวคุณภาพสูงของขึ้นชื่อประจำเมือง
บอกเลยว่าไม่ผิดหวังเลยครับ นุ่ม ละลายในปากจริง ๆ

แต่ไฮไลต์ที่รอคอยมานานคือ
สวน Miyagawa Ryokuchi Park สวนริมแม่น้ำมิยางาวะ
เราเคยขับรถผ่านหลายรอบแล้วชอบมาก เพราะ
ตลอดแนวแม่น้ำจะมี ต้นซากุระเรียงราย อย่างสวยงาม
เงียบสงบ ไม่พลุกพล่าน เป็นหนึ่งใน จุดชมซากุระลับ ๆ ที่เราประทับใจมาก

รอบนี้เลยตั้งใจพกของไป ปิกนิก ที่นี่โดยเฉพาะ
ได้นั่งเล่น เดินเล่น สูดอากาศเย็น ๆ ไปกับวิวธรรมชาติ
รู้ตัวอีกที ก็หมดวันแบบเต็มอิ่มโดยไม่รู้ตัวเลย
เป็นหนึ่งวันที่เรียบง่าย...

Kamikōchi

Technically, this was Minmin’s second time in Kamikōchi—
the first time being five years ago, when he was still in the womb, around six months along.
Back then, he didn’t complain, walked like a champ… and barely ate a thing! 😄
Let’s just say things have changed.

The night before heading to Kamikōchi, we stayed in Hirayu Onsen (平湯温泉),
a quiet little town tucked into the Northern Japan Alps.
It’s famous for its natural hot springs with healing minerals and stunning mountain scenery.
While walking around, you can catch the subtle scent of sulfur in the air,
and there are public footbaths perfect for the chilly mountain weather.

We chose to stay here because it’s very close to the bus terminal to Kamikōchi—
since private cars are not allowed into Kamikōchi, this village is basically the final stop if you're driving.
It only took us 5 minutes to drive to the bus terminal, followed by a scenic 30-minute bus ride into the valley.

Kamikōchi is a breathtaking alpine valley often called
“The Switzerland of Japan” for its beauty—
with the Azusa River winding gently between towering peaks and lush natural surroundings.

This time, the sky was a bit cloudy, and snow still covered parts of the ground,
which made photography tricky, but walking was actually really pleasant thanks to the cool weather.

We took the classic hiking route from Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond,
which is about 9.2 kilometers round trip, and we completed it in about 4 hours.
The trail offered views of rivers, forests, snow patches, and mountains—peaceful and refreshing.

เราเลือกนอนที่นี่เพราะใกล้ จุดขึ้นรถบัสไป Kamikōchi ซึ่งต้องบอกไว้เลยว่า
ไม่สามารถนำรถส่วนตัวขึ้นไปที่ Kamikōchi ได้
Hirayu Onsen จึงแทบจะเป็นจุดสุดท้ายที่สามารถขับรถมาเองได้
จากที่พัก ขับรถไปท่ารถบัสแค่ 5 นาที แล้วก็นั่งบัสต่ออีกประมาณ ครึ่งชั่วโมง ก็ถึง Kamikōchi

คามิโคจิ (Kamikōchi) เป็นหุบเขาสูงที่งดงามในเทือกเขาแอลป์ตอนเหนือของญี่ปุ่น ได้รับการขนานนามว่า
"สวิตเซอร์แลนด์แห่งญี่ปุ่น" ด้วยภูมิทัศน์ที่สวยงามของ แม่น้ำอาซุสะ (Azusa River)
ที่ล้อมรอบด้วยยอดเขาสูงและธรรมชาติอันอุดมสมบูรณ์

รอบนี้ Kamikōchi ฟ้าไม่ค่อยเปิด และมี หิมะปกคลุมบางส่วน
ทำให้ถ่ายรูปยากพอสมควร แต่ก็เดินเพลินดี เพราะอากาศไม่ร้อน

เราเลือกเส้นทางยอดนิยมจาก สะพานกัปปะ (Kappa Bridge) ไปยัง บ่อน้ำเมียวจิน (Myojin Pond)
ระยะทางประมาณ 9.2 กิโลเมตร ใช้เวลาเดินประมาณ 4 ชั่วโมง
ระหว่างทางได้เห็นทั้งแม่น้ำ ป่า หิมะ และวิวภูเขา เดินกันเพลินแบบไม่รู้ตัวเลย

Asahi Funakawa 'Spring Quartet' and Obuse Village

Today was all about flowers and small-town charm. We started our day at the Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet, one of Japan’s most breathtaking seasonal viewing spots, located in Asahi Town, Toyama Prefecture. What makes this place truly special is the harmony of four natural elements—cherry blossoms, tulips, r**e blossoms (nanohana), and the snow-capped Northern Japanese Alps. Together, they create a vibrant, postcard-worthy landscape.

Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, the cherry blossoms had already passed their full bloom. Still, we thought the scenery was absolutely beautiful.

After the flower fields, we continued our journey to Obuse, a tiny town in Nagano Prefecture. Despite its size, Obuse charmed us completely. We enjoyed wandering through the quaint old streets, especially the “Chestnut Alley”, while sampling various chestnut-based treats. Obuse has been famous for chestnut cultivation for over 600 years, and sweets like Mont Blanc and chestnut rice are incredibly popular.

Obuse is also home to the historic Masuichi-Ichimura sake brewery, which still produces sake using traditional methods dating back to the 19th century.

For dinner, we dined at Obuse Yoritsuki Ryōri Kurabu, a restaurant known for its refined presentation of Shinshu regional cuisine. The name "寄り付き料理" refers to the meals once served to workers at sake breweries during the Edo period—simple yet flavorful dishes that highlight the natural taste of high-quality, local ingredients.

วันนี้เรามาเที่ยวสวนดอกไม้กันที่ Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet ซึ่งถือเป็นหนึ่งในจุดชมดอกไม้ที่งดงามที่สุดของญี่ปุ่น ตั้งอยู่ที่เมืองอาซาฮิ จังหวัดโทยามะ ความพิเศษของที่นี่คือการรวมตัวของธรรมชาติ 4 อย่าง ได้แก่
ดอกซากุระ ดอกทิวลิป ดอกนาโนะฮานะ (r**e blossoms) และ เทือกเขาแอลป์ญี่ปุ่นตอนเหนือที่ปกคลุมด้วยหิมะ สร้างเป็นวิวพาโนรามาที่งดงาม

เสียดายที่ตอนเรามาถึง ดอกซากุระเลยช่วงที่เบ่งบานเต็มที่ไปแล้ว แต่ถึงอย่างนั้นเราก็ยังคิดว่ามันสวยมากอยู่ดี

หลังจากจบสวนดอกไม้ เราก็ขับรถมาที่เมืองเล็ก ๆ แต่อบอุ่นอย่าง Obuse ในจังหวัดนากาโนะ ถึงแม้จะเป็นเมืองเล็กมาก ๆ แต่พวกเราก็สนุกกับการเดินเล่นในย่านเมืองเก่า โดยเฉพาะใน ตรอกเกาลัด (Chestnut Alley) ที่เดินไปก็ชิมขนมไป เพราะที่นี่ขึ้นชื่อเรื่อง เกาลัด มาก ปลูกมายาวนานกว่า 600 ปี

ของขึ้นชื่อได้แก่ Mont Blanc เกาลัด และ ข้าวเหนียวเกาลัด ที่หอมหวานนุ่มละมุนมาก

นอกจากนี้ Obuse ยังเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงกลั่นสาเกเก่าแก่ Masuichi-Ichimura ซึ่งยังคงผลิตสาเกด้วยวิธีดั้งเดิมตั้งแต่ศตวรรษที่ 19

มื้อเย็นเราเลือกร้าน Obuse Yoritsuki Ryōri Kurabu ซึ่งโดดเด่นเรื่องการนำเสนออาหารพื้นเมืองของชินชู (Shinshu) โดยใช้วัตถุดิบท้องถิ่นสดใหม่และคุณภาพสูง ชื่อร้าน “寄り付き料理” หมายถึงอาหารที่เคยเสิร์ฟให้กับคนงานในโรงกลั่นสาเกสมัยเอโดะ เป็นอาหารเรียบง่ายแต่รสชาติลึกซึ้งจากวัตถุดิบที่ดีที่สุดในท้องถิ่นครับ

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

And finally, we arrived at the highlight and main reason behind this entire trip—Minmin’s wish to see the giant snow wall! Today, we journeyed through the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route to reach Yuki no Otani, also known as The Great Snow Canyon.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a scenic travel route that stretches across Japan’s Northern Alps, connecting Toyama and Nagano Prefectures. Spanning about 90 kilometers, the elevation changes dramatically—up to 2,400 meters!

The journey itself isn’t difficult, but it involves many steps and can be quite exhausting. In short, the trip looked like this:
car → train → cable car → bus → trolley bus → ropeway → on foot—and the return was the same in reverse.

The night before, we stayed in Toyama for convenience, planning to drive to Toyama Station, park the car, and take a 1-hour train ride to Tateyama to catch the cable car. Looking back, we should’ve just driven straight to Tateyama instead—train seats were packed and standing-room only.

We left the hotel before 5 AM to catch the 5:50 AM train, arriving in Tateyama around 7 AM. Our cable car was scheduled for 7:50 AM, but chaos broke out when the station announced delays due to snow blocking the tracks. Our schedule got pushed back by nearly 3 hours.

But after all the exhaustion and delays, we finally reached the giant snow wall. Minmin had a blast playing in the snow, building a snowman, and laughing despite the strong winds. At times, the gusts felt like full-blown snowstorms—but the experience was 100% worth it.

การเดินทางไม่ยากแต่ เหนื่อยและหลายขั้นตอนมาก—
รถยนต์ → รถไฟ → เคเบิลคาร์ → รถบัส → รถรางไฟฟ้า → กระเช้าลอยฟ้า → เดินเท้า
ส่วนขากลับก็เหมือนเดิมแค่ย้อนเส้นทาง

คืนก่อนหน้าการเดินทาง เรานอนกันที่เมือง Toyama เพื่อให้สะดวกในการขับรถไปจอดที่สถานี Toyama แล้วนั่งรถไฟต่อไปยัง Tateyama ใช้เวลาประมาณ 1 ชั่วโมง
จริง ๆ แล้วจะขับรถไป Tateyama เลยก็ได้ ใช้เวลาใกล้เคียงกัน ถ้าย้อนเวลาได้ ผมจะขับรถมาเองเลย เพราะรถไฟจาก Toyama คนเยอะมาก ไม่มีที่นั่ง เบียดกันสุด ๆ

เราออกจากโรงแรมก่อน ตี 5 เพื่อไปขึ้นรถไฟ รอบ 5.50 น. ถึง Tateyama ก็เกือบ 7 โมงเช้า เตรียมขึ้นเคเบิลคาร์รอบ 7.50 น.
แต่ความวุ่นวายก็เริ่มขึ้น เมื่อมีประกาศจากสถานีว่าด้านบนมีหิมะขวางทาง ต้องเลื่อนเวลาออกเดินทางไปเกือบ 3 ชั่วโมง ผิดแผนไปหมด

สุดท้ายหลังจากการเดินทางที่ยาวนาน เราก็มาถึง กำแพงหิมะยักษ์ ที่มินมินเฝ้ารอ มินมินสนุกมากกับการเล่นหิมะ ปั้น Snowman แม้จะต้องเจอกับลมแรง ๆ ที่พัดทีเหมือนจะกลายเป็นพายุหิมะ แต่มันก็คุ้มค่ากับการเดินทางที่แสนเหนื่อยครับ!

Amaharashi Coast : Toyama

Tonight, we planned to stay in Toyama, using it as our base for the early-morning adventure to the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. We had a free afternoon to explore the city, so we checked out a few popular spots like the Toyama Museum and the well-known Starbucks at Kansui Park—but to be honest, they didn’t quite impress us.

For us, the real highlight of Toyama came in the evening, when we visited the Amaharashi Coast. It’s a famous scenic spot in the Hokuriku region, known especially for its view of the Sea of Japan with the Tateyama mountain range—soaring over 3,000 meters—rising magnificently in the background.

This is one of the few places in Japan where you can see snow-capped mountains stretching behind the deep blue sea. The air was cool and the atmosphere peaceful, making it the perfect place for a relaxed evening stroll.

Amaharashi Coast : Toyama

คืนนี้เราตั้งใจจะนอนกันที่เมือง Toyama เพื่อใช้เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการเดินทางสู่ Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route ในเช้าตรู่วันรุ่งขึ้น เรามีเวลาช่วงบ่ายเล็กน้อย เลยแวะเที่ยวในตัวเมือง Toyama ไปดูสถานที่ยอดนิยมอย่าง พิพิธภัณฑ์เมือง Toyama และ Starbucks Kansui Park ซึ่งเป็นสาขาที่โด่งดัง แต่ก็รู้สึกเฉย ๆ

Shirakawa-go and Gokayama

Today's travel plan was simple: visiting two small villages in Gifu Prefecture. The highlight of these two villages is the traditional Gassho-zukuri houses, with their steep, thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall, resembling hands pressed together in prayer. Both villages were registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995.

The first village we visited was Shirakawa-go, which is more popular among tourists, possibly because of easier access by public transportation and better tourist facilities. Naturally, it was more crowded.

After that, we continued to Gokayama, where there were significantly fewer people. If you have a car, we highly recommend visiting here instead. Gokayama feels quieter and more authentic, giving a stronger sense of a real, living village. Tourist facilities are available, but not overwhelming, keeping the genuine charm intact.

Interestingly, Gokayama also offers overnight stays in the traditional houses, but there are only six houses available for tourists, making reservations a bit tricky. Fortunately, we managed to book a stay. Let’s see how this special overnight experience will turn out!

Shirakawa-go และ Gokayama

หมู่บ้านแรกที่เราไปคือ Shirakawa-go ซึ่งค่อนข้างเป็นที่นิยมในหมู่นักท่องเที่ยวมากกว่า อาจเพราะการเดินทางสะดวกด้วยขนส่งสาธารณะ และมีสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกที่เตรียมไว้รองรับนักท่องเที่ยวได้ดี ทำให้ที่นี่ค่อนข้างคึกคักและมีผู้คนพลุกพล่าน

จากนั้นเราก็มาต่อกันที่ Gokayama ซึ่งเงียบสงบกว่ามาก ถ้ามีรถยนต์ส่วนตัว เราแนะนำที่นี่เลย หมู่บ้านที่นี่ดูสงบและมีเสน่ห์ ที่สำคัญคือเรารู้สึกได้ถึงบรรยากาศของหมู่บ้านที่มีผู้คนอาศัยอยู่จริง ๆ

แม้ว่าสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกจะมีบ้าง แต่ไม่มากเกินจนเสียบรรยากาศ นอกจากนี้ Gokayama ยังมีบริการให้นักท่องเที่ยวค้างคืนในบ้านกัสโชซึคุริด้วย แต่มีแค่ 6 หลังเท่านั้น การจองที่พักค่อนข้างวุ่นวายอยู่เหมือนกัน แต่พวกเราก็โชคดีที่จองสำเร็จแล้ว ลองดูซิว่าประสบการณ์การค้างคืนที่นี่จะเป็นยังไงบ้าง!

Gujo Hachiman + Takayama
Our first stop on the Nagoya trip was Gujo Hachiman. Originally, we planned for Minmin to join a food replica display class here, but in the end, there wasn’t enough time—Minmin was too busy playing arcade games at the display shop!

The rest of our visit turned into a slow, relaxing walk through this small mountain town. Despite its size, Gujo Hachiman is home to a beautiful hilltop landmark, **Gujo Hachiman Castle**. We only got to admire it from below due to time constraints. Another highlight was the town’s famous **koi ponds**, filled with large, beautiful carp swimming through narrow canals between traditional wooden houses.

A large stream runs through the town, and our favorite part was strolling alongside it, taking photos of cherry blossoms, and enjoying the peaceful sound of flowing water. Before leaving, we stopped for ramen—nothing fancy, but the experience was lovely since the shop was right next to the stream.

Next, we headed to **Takayama**, one of the main tourism hubs of the Hida region. It’s a popular stopover before traveling onward to Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, Matsumoto, or Nagoya. Our visit coincided with the **Takayama Festival**, one of Japan’s top three most beautiful festivals. The city was packed with people. We got to see the colorful parade and traditional performances.

We originally planned to stay in Takayama that night, but due to the festival, all accommodations were fully booked. No worries—we drove up into the hills and found a place to stay a little farther out. We’ll be back to stay here again at the end of the trip, and we’ve made it our mission to try **Hida beef**, Takayama’s famous specialty!

อีกหนึ่งไฮไลต์ของเมืองนี้คือ **บ่อปลาคาร์ฟ** ที่มีปลาตัวอ้วน ๆ แหวกว่ายอยู่ตามร่องน้ำระหว่างบ้านเก่า ๆ เมืองนี้มีลำธารใหญ่ไหลผ่าน ทำให้ระหว่างทางเดิน เราเพลิดเพลินกับการถ่ายรูปต้นซากุระ พร้อมฟังเสียงน้ำไหลไปด้วย

ก่อนออกจากเมือง เราแวะทานราเมงร้านหนึ่ง อาจไม่ใช่ราเมงที่อร่อยที่สุด แต่บรรยากาศดีมาก เพราะร้านอยู่ติดลำธารเลย

จากนั้นเรามาต่อที่ **เมือง Takayama** ซึ่งถือเป็นหนึ่งในศูนย์กลางการท่องเที่ยวของภูมิภาคฮิดะ เป็นจุดแวะยอดนิยมก่อนเดินทางต่อไป Shirakawa-go, คานาซาวะ, มัตสึโมโต้ หรือกลับเข้าเมืองนาโกย่า

โชคดีที่เรามาตรงกับช่วง **เทศกาล Takayama Festival** ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในสามเทศกาลที่สวยที่สุดของญี่ปุ่น คนเยอะมาก และพวกเราได้ชมขบวนแห่ รวมถึงการแสดงแบบดั้งเดิม

ตอนแรกเราวางแผนจะพักที่เมืองนี้ในคืนนี้ แต่ที่พักเต็มหมดเพราะเป็นช่วงเทศกาล เราเลยขับรถขึ้นเขาไปหาที่พักไกลนิดนึงแทน แต่ไม่เป็นไร เพราะเราจะกลับมาพักที่เมืองนี้อีกครั้งในช่วงท้ายของทริป และครั้งนี้เราตั้งใจว่าจะต้องกิน เนื้อฮิดะ ของดีเมืองนี้ให้ได้!

New Zealand Trip 12 : Aoraki/Mount Cook—and so we arrived at the final major attraction of our South Island New Zealand trip.

Aoraki, or Mount Cook, is the highest mountain in New Zealand. We chose to stay here for one night so we’d have time to take Minmin on a proper hike. Accommodation options are limited in this area, with most places belonging to **The Hermitage Hotel**—if you’re staying overnight, chances are you’ll be here.

The excitement of visiting Mt. Cook builds throughout the drive. The majestic peak gradually comes into view, surrounded by dramatic glaciers. Below, the striking turquoise waters of **Lake Pukaki** set the perfect foreground for this unforgettable scenery.

อาโอรากิ หรือเมาท์คุก เป็นภูเขาที่สูงที่สุดในนิวซีแลนด์ เราเลือกพักที่นี่ 1 คืน เพื่อที่จะได้มีเวลาพามินมินเดินขึ้นเขาสักหนึ่งรอบ ที่พักในบริเวณนี้จะไม่ได้มีให้เลือกมาก ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นของเครือ **The Hermitage Hotel** ใครจะมาพักที่นี่ก็มักจะลงเอยที่โรงแรมนี้

ความตื่นเต้นของการมาเที่ยว Mt. Cook เริ่มตั้งแต่เส้นทางการขับรถ ยอดเขาอันยิ่งใหญ่ค่อย ๆ โผล่มาให้เห็น โอบล้อมด้วยธารน้ำแข็ง ส่วนด้านล่างคือทะเลสาบสีฟ้าสดของ **Lake Pukaki** ที่เพิ่มความอลังการให้กับวิวได้อย่างลงตัว

New Zealand Trip 11 / Mt. John Observatory & Peter's Lookout
Not far from Lake Tekapo is another popular attraction—Mt. John Observatory, one of New Zealand's leading astronomical research centers. Located at the summit of Mount John, the observatory offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Tekapo from above.

If you’re feeling hungry, there's also the Astro Café to enjoy. The area has been designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve, making it perfect for stargazing. Note that entry is regulated: only one car is allowed in for every one that exits, so make sure to allow some extra time. There’s also an entry fee of NZD 8.

Next, we stopped at Peter’s Lookout, a famous viewpoint located along Mount Cook Road, about 13 kilometers from the Pukaki junction. It’s another perfect photo spot with the vibrant blue waters of Lake Pukaki and the towering peak of Aoraki/Mount Cook in the background—absolutely stunning!
ใกล้ ๆ กับ Lake Tekapo จะมีอีกหนึ่งสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวยอดนิยม คือ Mt. John Observatory หอดูดาววิจัยทางดาราศาสตร์ชั้นนำของนิวซีแลนด์ ตั้งอยู่บนยอดเขา Mt. John ซึ่งจากตรงนี้เราจะมองเห็นวิว Lake Tekapo แบบพาโนรามาจากมุมสูง

ถ้าหิวก็มี Astro Café ไว้ให้บริการ พร้อมชมวิวสวย ๆ ไปด้วย ที่นี่ถูกประกาศให้เป็นเขตอนุรักษ์ท้องฟ้ามืดสากล เหมาะกับการดูดาวมาก ๆ

ใครจะมาเที่ยวที่นี่ต้องเผื่อเวลาไว้หน่อย เพราะเขาจำกัดจำนวนรถที่เข้า ต้องมีรถออก 1 คัน ถึงจะให้รถเข้าได้อีก 1 คัน และเสียค่าเข้าคนละ 8 เหรียญ

จากนั้นเราก็แวะอีกจุดที่ห้ามพลาด คือ Peter’s Lookout จุดชมวิวชื่อดังของนิวซีแลนด์ ตั้งอยู่บนถนน Mount Cook ห่างจากทางแยก Pukaki ประมาณ 13 กิโลเมตร เป็นอีกหนึ่งจุดถ่ายภาพที่ยอดเยี่ยม มองเห็นทะเลสาบ Pukaki สีฟ้าสดใส และยอดเขา Aoraki/Mount Cook ตั้งตระหง่านอยู่ด้านหลัง—สวยสุด ๆ!
