Some door handles are just door handles. These ones have another story.

Look closely and you'll see the telltale curved iron hook, worn smooth and dark with age, fused onto handles of hand-carved, spiral-twisted wood — the unmistakable silhouette of a traditional ankus, or bullhook, once used by mahouts to guide working elephants across Southeast Asia. Now, instead of walking beside a two-ton animal through the jungle, they hang quietly on a hotel door.

There's something almost poetic about it. Tools that once belonged to a harder, older way of life — logging camps, temple processions, elephant treks — have been repurposed into something purely decorative. No more hard labor, just holding a door open for guests.

It's also a nice reminder of how much has changed. These hooks are not purposed to hurt but to control the massive creatures. So relics like these feel less like everyday tools now and more like artifacts, a physical marker of an industry in transition.

Found hanging on a cabinet door on a rainy night. Sometimes the best souvenirs aren't things you buy, but things you notice. 🐘✨

Life on the Chao Phraya River – Before Bangkok Became a City

Over a hundred years ago, the Chao Phraya River was not just a Bangkok waterway but the heartbeat of everyday life.

Imagine this 🤔 just before sunrise, the soft splash of wooden paddles breaks the silence. A woman glides her boat toward your stilted home, calling out warm rice porridge, curries, and sticky sweets. You don't walk to the market. The market comes to you.

Cargo boats heavy with rice🌶️, coconuts, and silk weave past each other mid-river. Children leap from the floorboards of floating houses into the brown water below. Grandmothers kneel at the water's edge, washing clothes as monks collect alms along the bank.

The Chao Phraya was Bangkok's main street, long before cars, concrete, and expressways took over.

Today, the river still flows through the heart of the city. But the sound of paddles and the smell of floating kitchens have faded into memory.

Come and embrace the real Bangkok☺️
