🇰🇭 | More Than 80% of the Cultural Elements Featured in Hun Sen’s Video Are Identified as Siamese Culture 🇹🇭

A video posted by Hun Sen to promote Cambodia’s tourism and culture has drawn widespread attention after observers found that more than 80% of the cultural elements featured throughout the video are of Siamese (Thai) origin. These include Khon (masked dance drama), Thai musical instruments, Siamese royal court attire, temple architecture reflecting Siamese artistic traditions, and historical Siamese court dancers.

Although Khon traces its origins to India’s Ramayana, Siam developed and transformed the art into its own distinctive tradition through its storyline, costumes, music, choreography, and performance style. Over time, Khon became a defining cultural heritage of Siam. However, a form of Khon closely resembling the Siamese tradition is also found in Cambodia. Cambodian performances feature costumes, crowns, masks, and other ceremonial regalia that closely resemble those of the Siamese royal tradition.

In addition, the video also features Siamese dancers who were historically invited by the Khmer king to perform in Phnom Penh. Historical records describe how performers from the Siamese royal court were invited to the Khmer court, where they performed and influenced court entertainment and ceremonial traditions.

The video also includes the khaen, the traditional bamboo mouth organ that is widely recognized as the national musical instrument of Laos. Its presence indicates that the background incorporates cultural elements from multiple traditions, including both Siamese culture and Lao musical heritage.

According to observations made by researchers and cultural enthusiasts, more than 80% of the cultural elements visible throughout the video can be identified as originating from Siamese culture, while the remaining elements include cultural items from neighboring countries, such as the Lao khaen.

🇹🇭 | More than 80% of Thailand’s permanent border barrier in the pilot section along the Thai–Cambodian border has now been completed.

The first phase covers a 1.3-kilometer stretch between border markers 52 and 54 in Pong Nam Ron District, Chanthaburi Province. The project includes bullet-resistant concrete walls, 4.3-meter-high heavy-duty steel mesh fencing, and barbed wire installed along the top to reinforce border security.

Phase 1 is expected to be finished by mid-August, after which construction will immediately continue with Phase 2. The next section will extend 7.07 kilometers between border markers 54 and 59, bringing the total length of the completed barrier to 8.38 kilometers.

🇰🇭 | Cambodians Claim Louis Vuitton’s Monogram Was Copied from Angkor Wat

A viral claim circulating on Cambodian social media alleges that Louis Vuitton’s iconic Monogram was inspired by decorative patterns found at Angkor Wat. The claim has sparked debate online, but no official evidence has been presented to support it.

Supporters of the claim point to similarities between some floral and geometric patterns found in the temple complex and elements of the luxury brand’s signature Monogram. However, no evidence has been provided showing that Louis Vuitton or its designers referenced Angkor Wat as the source of the design.

While comparisons between historical art and modern designs are common, Louis Vuitton has never stated that Angkor Wat inspired its Monogram. According to the brand, the Monogram Canvas was created by Georges Vuitton in 1896 as a distinctive trademark to combat counterfeiting. Design historians generally associate the pattern with late 19th-century decorative influences, including Japanese motifs popular during the era (Japonism), Victorian decorative arts, and geometric floral ornamentation. To date, there is no publicly available evidence linking the Monogram’s design to Angkor Wat.

🇵🇭🇨🇳 | Escalating Tensions: Maritime Clash at Second Thomas Shoal Between China and the Philippines.

Tensions have flared up again following a maritime clash at Second Thomas Shoal (Ayungin Shoal) on Monday, July 20, 2026, leading to heated diplomatic exchanges between Beijing and Manila.

Statements from Both Sides

🇵🇭 The Philippines (Manila):
The Armed Forces of the Philippines reported that China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels approached the BRP Sierra Madre, a World War II-era LST grounded on the shoal as a military outpost.
When Philippine personnel launched inflatable boats to ward off the approach, Chinese forces reportedly attacked them with wooden batons, inflicting a head injury on a Philippine sailor (requiring four stitches) and damaging the rigid inflatable boat.

🇨🇳 China (Beijing):
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the allegations, asserting that Philippine forces were the aggressors who rammed a Chinese patrol vessel and attacked Chinese personnel using oars and long wooden poles. Beijing stated that the CCG acted within legal bounds with maximum restraint and permitted the Philippines to evacuate the injured personnel for medical treatment on humanitarian grounds.

Impact and Escalation
1. Diplomatic Retaliation: Both nations formally summoned their respective ambassadors on Tuesday to lodge official protests.
2. Allied Reactions: The United States and Australia issued statements condemning China's actions, characterizing them as provocative and destabilizing to the disputed waters.
3. Regional Atmosphere: Occurring alongside key ASEAN ministerial and dialogue-partner meetings, the incident has reignited intense debate around the implementation of the regional Code of Conduct (COC).
