𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙'𝙨 𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙜𝙚.
Watch a Thai classical dancer closely and the first thing you may notice is the hands.

The fingers curve backwards, the wrists form elegant lines, the arms move through carefully defined positions, and even the angle of the head matters. To someone seeing it for the first time, it can simply look beautiful.

But traditionally, these movements are not decoration. They are part of the storytelling.

Thai classical performing arts developed within court and theatrical traditions over centuries, with forms such as Lakhon and Khon using codified movement to communicate actions, emotions and relationships. In Lakhon Ram, for example, choreography is central to conveying the story, while narration and dialogue may be performed by singers or a chorus offstage.

That means the dancer is doing something quite different from simply “dancing to music”.

The hands can suggest actions or objects. A movement may represent a flower, indicate an emotion, or communicate what a character is doing. The vocabulary becomes more meaningful when combined with the eyes, posture, feet and the position of the body.

In Khon, the masked dance drama traditionally tells the story of the Ramakien, Thailand's great epic. Because many performers wear masks that make facial expression and speech impossible, body language becomes especially important. An experienced audience can follow parts of the dialogue simply by reading the movements.

There is also a deeper connection to Thai ideas of learning and respect. Traditional performing arts are passed from teacher to student, and ceremonies such as wai khru express respect and gratitude toward teachers and the knowledge they transmit.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨
What may look like a beautiful performance to visitors is actually storytelling through movement. Once you know this, you stop watching only the costumes and start reading the dancer's hands, eyes and posture.

𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙏𝙞𝙥
When watching a performance, choose one dancer and follow their hands rather than the whole stage. You may be surprised how much of the story you can begin to understand without knowing every word.

On 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟰–𝟮𝟱, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, Chiang Mai celebrates 𝗬𝗶 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝘆 𝗞𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗴 — with the main celebrations peaking on the full moon night of November 24.

As darkness falls, the city and surrounding countryside come alive with candlelight, traditional ceremonies, illuminated temples and thousands of glowing lanterns.

𝗬𝗶 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗴 is rooted in Northern Thailand’s Lanna culture. The release of a khom loi, the famous paper sky lantern, is traditionally associated with making merit, offering respect and letting go of worries.

𝗟𝗼𝘆 𝗞𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗴 takes place at the same time across Thailand. Small decorated floats carrying candles and incense are placed on rivers and waterways — traditionally as a gesture of respect and gratitude towards the water.

𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙏𝙞𝙥 : If you’re staying in Chiang Mai for both nights, experience the festival in two completely different ways.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, head out to an organised Yi Peng event and experience the spectacular mass release of sky lanterns in a designated area.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, stay in the city and join the local crowds along the 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿. Watch people release krathongs onto the water, wander through the busy streets, discover local food stalls and simply soak up the atmosphere.

One evening gives you the spectacular picture. The other lets you experience the festival as Chiang Mai does it.

𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘𝗧𝗬 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧:
Sky lanterns are not permitted to be released freely throughout Chiang Mai. Due to aviation and fire-safety requirements, their release is only allowed in officially designated areas and during authorised periods.

That’s why joining an organised Yi Peng event is the safest way to experience the famous lantern release while respecting local regulations.

If you feel like getting out of the city for a day and seeing a more real side of Chiang Rai, this is a really nice way to do it.
The day starts around Pha Soet Hot Spring, and from there you just slowly make your way into the countryside. The trail isn’t rushed — you walk through 𝙩𝙚𝙖 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨, 𝙗𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙤𝙤 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩, 𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 where people are just going about their day.

You’ll pass 𝘼𝙠𝙝𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙖𝙝𝙪 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 along the way, and it doesn’t feel staged or touristy — it’s just part of the route. Kids playing, people working, that kind of thing.

After a few hours, you reach one of the bigger waterfalls in the area. It’s a good spot to take a break, cool down, and if you feel like it, jump in for a swim. Definitely worth bringing your swimsuit.
The lunch is something a bit different. With the help of your guide you will cook everything right there in the forest using 𝙗𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙤𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙩𝙪𝙥. Nothing fancy, but honestly that’s what makes it special — just sitting there, eating in the middle of the jungle after a proper walk.

At the end of the day, you head back to the hot spring to relax a bit before returning. It’s a nice way to finish, especially after 10–12 km on your feet. It’s not a hard trek, but it’s also not just a casual stroll. If you’re reasonably active and enjoy being outdoors, you’ll be completely fine.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙥 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 : These tours here support genuine community-based tourism. Your trip directly uplifts hill tribe families, keeps traditions alive, and ensures that the village grows on its own terms. Every meal, every conversation, every cup of coffee becomes a beautiful exchange between guests and hosts.

𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙏𝙞𝙥 : Wear proper shoes — the trail can be uneven and a bit slippery in parts. And bring water, a towel, and swimwear if you want to enjoy the waterfall.

If you’re looking for something simple, outdoorsy, and a bit more connected to local life, this is a really good day out in Chiang Rai.

Chiang Mai and its Old City is a fantastic travel destination with a young vibe, small cafes, artisan shops and lots of temples and historic places.

Chiang Mai is renowned for its numerous Buddhist temples, with over 300 temples located within and around the city. In contrast, Bangkok, while also rich in religious sites, does not have as many temples as Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai’s temple density and historical significance make it a prominent destination for those interested in exploring Buddhist architecture and culture.

With the self guided 𝙊𝙇𝘿 𝘾𝙄𝙏𝙔 𝙒𝘼𝙇𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙏𝙊𝙐𝙍 from Chiang Mai Gate, around the old city to the Silver Temple, you can discover the highlights of Chiang Mai on your own pace and experience the amazing charm of the previous Lanna Kingdom capital.

𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗 – 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 #𝟲
𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙃𝙖𝙨 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙁𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨.

Thailand is often described as one country with one culture. That is true politically, but culturally it is much more complicated.

Look at a map and you will see four broad regions: the North, Northeast (Isan), Central Thailand and the South. Spend time in each, however, and the differences quickly become obvious—in the food people cook, the languages they speak, the houses they build, the festivals they celebrate and even the landscapes around them.

In the North, Lanna heritage remains visible in Chiang Mai’s temples, wooden houses, textiles and food such as khao soi. Northern Thai, or Kham Mueang, also differs noticeably from standard Thai.

In Isan, deep Mekong and Lao influences shape language, food and traditions. Som tam, larb, sticky rice and festivals such as Bun Bang Fai are part of this distinctive regional culture.

Central Thailand grew around the Chao Phraya River, with Bangkok becoming the country’s political and cultural centre. Central Thai eventually became the national standard, influencing cuisine, architecture and traditions across the country.

Further south, maritime trade shaped a culture influenced by Malay, Chinese and Indian Ocean connections. Southern cuisine uses more chilli, turmeric and spices, while Malay Muslim traditions remain especially important in the far south.

These aren't simply regional variations. They are living identities shaped by geography, migration, kingdoms, trade and religion. Thailand united them politically, but their distinct identities remain strong.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨
Thailand isn't one single cultural experience. Each region has its own history, identity and way of life.

Once you understand that, travelling through Thailand becomes less about collecting places—and more about discovering the people and cultures that make each place different.

𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙏𝙞𝙥
Travel across at least two regions and compare them. Visit local markets, listen to the language, try regional dishes and notice the architecture. Don't just ask what's “Thai”—ask what's local.

𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗥𝗔𝗜: 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗛 𝗕𝗘𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗗.

Most visitors come to Chiang Rai looking for three things: a White Temple, a Blue Temple and a photo worth posting. But take the road more slowly, and you discover something much more interesting.

Chiang Rai is a place where art, spirituality and northern Thai culture constantly overlap — sometimes in ways that are beautiful, sometimes strange, and sometimes surprisingly thought-provoking.

Our private road trip begins at 𝙒𝙖𝙩 𝙍𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙆𝙝𝙪𝙣, the legendary White Temple. Its dazzling surface is impossible to miss, but the real story is underneath. Look at the desperate hands reaching from the ground. Notice the tiny mirrored details. Step inside and you’ll find Buddhist teachings mixed with images from modern life. It is less a traditional temple than an artist’s interpretation of the world we live in.

Then the mood changes completely.

At 𝘽𝙖𝙖𝙣 𝘿𝙖𝙢 𝙈𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙪𝙢, black-painted teak houses emerge from a leafy landscape. Created by the late Thai artist Thawan Duchanee, the collection is filled with animal horns, bones, carved wood and powerful architectural forms. It can feel dark and unsettling — but that is precisely what makes it fascinating. This is northern Thailand through an artist’s imagination, not a tourist attraction designed to please everyone.

And then comes the blue.

𝙒𝙖𝙩 𝙍𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙪𝙚𝙖 𝙏𝙚𝙣 glows in deep sapphire and gold. Inside, a huge luminous Buddha dominates the space, while intricate patterns climb the walls and ceiling. After the visual intensity of the White Temple and Baan Dam, the atmosphere here feels almost meditative.

Three places. Three completely different visions of Thailand.
And that’s what makes the journey worthwhile.

Together with Butler Driver, you don’t treat Chiang Rai like a checklist. We leave room for a proper northern lunch, a roadside coffee, a quiet viewpoint or simply a few extra minutes when a place deserves them.

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗶𝗽 : 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.
Chiang Rai becomes a different place once the day-trippers have gone. Start the next morning at 𝙒𝙖𝙩 𝙋𝙝𝙧𝙖 𝙆𝙖𝙚𝙬, discover Lanna art at 𝙈𝙖𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙝 𝙇𝙪𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙧𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙠, or take time to understand the region’s ethnic communities and their stories.

Because Chiang Rai isn’t really about seeing three temples. It’s about discovering what happens when northern Thailand’s art, beliefs, history and imagination meet.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗮𝗶 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗔𝗜 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗚𝗢𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧.

Just a few minutes from Tha Pae Gate, where Chiang Mai's Old City gets busy with cafés, markets and temples, there is a place that feels like you've stepped through a different door.

𝗪𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗴.

Dating back to around 1576, this little-known temple is a fascinating meeting point of Chiang Mai's Lanna heritage, Burmese craftsmanship and royal history.

And then you see the chedi. Tall, white and richly decorated with gold, its Burmese-style architecture is surrounded by an almost theatrical cast of mythical guardians and protective creatures. Look closely and you'll find an astonishing amount of detail hiding in plain sight.

But the temple has another secret. The elegant viharn wasn't originally built as a prayer hall. In the 1860s, it served as the 𝗵𝗼 𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗺 — the palace residence of Chiang Mai's ruler, Chao Kawilorot. His successor later transformed it into a viharn in 1878.

So you're not simply visiting an old temple. You're walking through a place where religious life, royal history and different architectural traditions have been woven together over centuries.

And perhaps that's what makes Wat Saen Fang so special. There are no grand crowds competing for the perfect photograph. No long procession of tour groups. Just the soft sound of temple bells, colourful lanterns, weathered timber, gilded details and quiet courtyards waiting to be noticed.

𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙏𝙞𝙥 : Don't just photograph the big white chedi. Walk slowly around its base and look at the guardian figures and tiny decorative details. Then step inside the wooden buildings and look up. The real beauty of Wat Saen Fang isn't always at eye level.

𝗪𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗴 is one of those Chiang Mai places that rewards curiosity rather than a checklist. And yes — it's now firmly on our very long list of sacred places worth discovering again.

𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗶 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 - your Thai Insider knows which ones are worth slowing down for.
