64 years ago, a nation found its own voice.
On 31 August 1962, Trinidad and Tobago stepped into Independence, ending colonial rule and beginning the journey of shaping our own destiny. Dr. Eric Williams became our first Prime Minister, and a new national identity began to take form — our flag, our anthem, our institutions, our sense of who we were becoming.
But independence was never simply a date on a calendar.
It was the result of generations who dreamed of freedom, demanded a greater voice, worked for opportunity, and believed that Trinidad and Tobago could chart its own course. Independence came during a wider wave of decolonisation across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
And the journey did not end in 1962.
In 1976, Trinidad and Tobago became a Republic, taking another defining step in our nationhood, with Sir Ellis Clarke becoming our first President.
Today, 64 years later, we inherit more than a history.
We inherit a responsibility.
To build.
To create.
To support one another.
To believe in our people.
To give our young people something worth believing in.
To keep moving forward — together.
Because the story of Trinidad and Tobago has never been only about where we came from.
It is about who we choose to become. 🇹🇹
