The Time to Act is Now: La Brea Shipyard of T&T Can Help Secure Our Economic Future

Recent reports from economists, the IMF, and local media have highlighted growing concerns about Trinidad and Tobago's economic outlook including rising debt levels, weakening reserves, slow economic growth, and increasing fiscal pressures.

These developments reinforce the urgent need to diversify our economy and create sustainable sources of foreign exchange earnings.

The La Brea Shipyard Project represents a strategic opportunity to do just that.

Why it matters:
✅ Generate high-quality jobs in welding, fabrication, marine engineering, logistics, and support services.

✅ Earn valuable US-dollar revenue from international vessel repairs, maintenance, and offshore energy support services.

✅ Reduce dependence on the energy sector by developing a globally competitive maritime industry.

✅ Create opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, and small businesses.

✅ Position La Brea as a major maritime and industrial hub in the Southern Caribbean, servicing the expanding Guyana and Suriname offshore industry.

With deep-water access, a strategic location near major shipping routes, and a skilled workforce, Trinidad and Tobago has the resources needed to compete in the international ship repair and marine services market.

The economic challenges facing our nation make it increasingly important that transformational projects capable of generating foreign exchange and sustainable employment move from concept to reality.

OFFSHORE OPERATIONS ENTER A NEW ERA

A remotely operated vehicle is now being controlled from land while working hundreds of kilometers offshore.

Dutch marine services giant Boskalis has successfully expanded its Remote Operations Center (ROC) in Aberdeen, allowing specialists onshore to directly support and operate ROV systems aboard offshore vessels in real time.

The system is already being used aboard the construction support vessel BOKA Northern Ocean and the diving support vessel BOKA Da Vinci, which is currently supporting decommissioning projects in the North Sea. Through a high-bandwidth satellite connection, offshore crews can receive 24-hour technical support and operational assistance from experts based ashore.

For maritime and offshore professionals, this marks another step toward the future of subsea operations. Tasks that once required larger offshore teams can now be monitored, supported, and in some cases controlled remotely, improving efficiency while reducing operational risk.

As offshore energy projects continue to expand, technologies such as remote operations centers, advanced ROVs, and real-time satellite connectivity are becoming increasingly important across the industry.

FCAW, SMAW, TIG, or Pipe Welding: Which Skill Opens the Most Doors?

Not all welding skills offer the same career opportunities. In major shipbuilding and industrial sectors, certain welding processes are consistently in high demand and can significantly increase a welder’s earning potential.

✅ FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding)
A cornerstone of structural fabrication, shipbuilding, and heavy industrial construction. Employers frequently seek welders proficient in FCAW for large-scale projects.

✅ SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)
Still one of the most versatile and widely used welding processes. SMAW remains essential for maintenance, repair, and field welding applications.

✅ TIG (GTAW)
Known for precision and quality, TIG welding is often required for stainless steel, aluminum, specialty alloys, and critical weld applications where accuracy matters most.

✅ Pipe Welding
Among the most specialized and sought-after welding disciplines. Qualified pipe welders are often difficult to find, making this skill highly valuable across multiple industries.

The highest-paid welders are often those who master multiple processes rather than specializing in just one.

Employers value versatility. A welder who can perform FCAW structural welding while also qualifying in TIG or pipe welding may have access to a broader range of projects, certifications, and higher-paying opportunities.

The real question isn't simply which process pays the most—it is which combination of skills makes you indispensable.

If you could add one welding certification or skill to your résumé tomorrow, what would it be?

TI Africa was originally delivered as Hellespont Metropolis (IMO 9224764), one of the four TI-class double-hull ULCC crude-oil tankers constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering at Okpo, South Korea, for the Hellespont group. Ordered in 2000, she was laid down on 24 September 2001, launched on 15 December 2001 and completed on 30 June 2002.

The vessel measured 380.00 m in overall length, 68.00 m in beam and approximately 24.50 m in draft, with original tonnage recorded at 234,006 GT and a deadweight capacity of up to 441,893 tonnes. Propulsion was provided by a single diesel engine rated at 36,937 kW, enabling a service speed of about 16.5 knots. Following the restructuring of the fleet, the ship was renamed TI Africa in July 2004.

TI Africa later transitioned from crude-oil transportation to offshore storage service, undergoing conversion in 2010 to become FSO Africa. During the conversion period, the vessel was documented at Port Rashid, Dubai, before entering service under the Marshall Islands flag.

Alongside sister vessel FSO Asia, she became part of the storage system supporting Qatar's Al Shaheen Field in the Persian Gulf, operating as a stationary floating storage and offloading unit rather than a conventional trading tanker. Current records continue to list FSO Africa as active, with no scrapping record attached, highlighting the extended operational value of converted double-hull ULCCs within offshore energy infrastructure.
