At just 11 years old, The Real Manatee Man saw scientists preparing to head out to conduct manatee health assessments in his home village in Belize.

He asked if he could join them. They gave him the opportunity.

Jamal continued volunteering and learning, eventually turning that early involvement into a career dedicated to protecting Belizeโ€™s endangered Antillean manatees and the habitats on which they depend.

Today, his work includes research, monitoring, rescue, education, community outreach and advocacy. He has also taken Belizeโ€™s conservation experience onto international platforms as a ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐†๐ž๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ฉ๐ก๐ข๐œ ๐„๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐ซ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐€๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐… ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ.

And now he is working to develop the ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ๐ž ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐‹๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ž & ๐„๐๐ฎ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐‚๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ, with the aim of rescuing and rehabilitating marine wildlife while helping another generation of young people learn about conservation.

There is a bigger Caribbean story here.

Jamalโ€™s story is about much more than manatees.

It shows what conservation can become when communities are not simply consulted,

That distinction matters.

Too often, community involvement begins and ends with being invited into a room, asked for an opinion and then sent home. Real participation goes further. It gives people knowledge, responsibility, experience and a genuine role in shaping what happens in the places where they live.

Because in Martinique's famous ๐‘ฆ๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘’ ๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘’, that's part of how you keep a racing boat upright.

The traditional yole ronde is a slender, nearly 10-metre-long boat with When the wind fills its huge sail, crew members climb out over the water onto long movable wooden poles called

Their own body weight becomes part of the sailing system - helping to balance the yole and keep it racing across the water.

It takes extraordinary strength, balance, timing and trust.

But this โ€œ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐ญ ๐’๐ž๐šโ€ is about much more than a race.

The yole ronde grew from Martiniqueโ€™s fishing and seafaring tradition, with its now-familiar design taking shape in the ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ’๐ŸŽ๐ฌ.

Traditionally handcrafted from local wood, it carries generations of Martinican boat-building and sailing knowledge.

In ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”, four yoles set out on a pioneering tour around Martinique, helping lay the foundations for the celebrated Tour des Yoles Rondes.

Today, the Tour brings communities together around the coastline to support their crews and celebrate a tradition that remains very much alive.

In 2020, Martiniqueโ€™s work to safeguard the yole โ€” from its construction to its sailing practices โ€” was recognised by UNESCO through ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐‘๐ž๐ ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐†๐จ๐จ๐ ๐’๐š๐Ÿ๐ž๐ ๐ฎ๐š๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ฌ.

So those sailors aren't hanging over the water for show.

For many of us in the Caribbean, this is how culture first entered our lives - standing by the roadside, holding a parentโ€™s hand, while somebody older explained who was coming and what the mas meant.

That is also how traditions survive.

Somebody remembers. Somebody knows how to make the costume, how to play the mas, how the movements go.

And somebody younger is there watching, learning and, hopefully, carrying it forward.

Vieux Corps, a masquerade of disguise that dates back to the pre-emancipation era, is one of Grenadaโ€™s distinctive traditional masquerades, with deep roots in communities in the west of the island.

But seeing it on the road during SpiceMas raises a bigger question:

Carnival will change. It always has. But change should not mean losing the traditions that tell us where we came from.

Because once the knowledge stops being passed on, the mas does not simply change.
It disappears.

So perhaps preservation begins with something very simple: keep playing it, keep teaching it, and make sure the young ones know what they are looking at.

And the sailors came in many forms - White Sailors, Flour Bag Sailors, Free French Sailors, King Sailors and Fancy Sailors - each bringing their own character and style to the street.

They didnโ€™t simply chip. There was the Bote, the Crab, Rock de Boat, Skip Jack and the Camel Walk - distinctive sailor dances filled with swagger, humour and movement.

And then there was

Thrown into the air, onto fellow masqueraders and unsuspecting spectators, it became part of the spectacle - until sailors, panmen and streets seemed to disappear beneath a cloud of white.

Long before European colonisation, the Caribbeanโ€™s Indigenous peoples understood the power of music, movement and collective expression.

Then came the European pre-Lenten celebrations, brought by French colonists in the 18th century. But in the crucible of the Caribbean, this tradition was utterly transformed. Enslaved Africans infused it with their own rich cultural heritage of music, masquerade, and spirit, reshaping it through the lived experience of slavery and the monumental fight for freedom.

Nowhere was that transformation more dramatic than in Trinidad and Tobago.

Out of that history emerged Through decades of restrictions, resistance and experimentation - from African drumming to tamboo bamboo and metal percussion - Trinidadians created something extraordinary: the steelpan, a revolutionary acoustic instrument fashioned from industrial steel and transformed into music. ๐Ÿฅ

Then Carnival travelled again.

It travelled with the diaspora to cities across the globe, evolving into vibrant festivals like ๐๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐‡๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ, ๐๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ค๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ง'๐ฌ ๐‹๐š๐›๐จ๐ซ ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐“๐จ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐จ'๐ฌ ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ข๐›๐š๐ง๐š, while always retaining its unique Caribbean soul.

There was a time when Green Corner in Port of Spain was more than a street corner.

It was where steelbands met, rivalries intensified and reputations were made.

The determination to outplay the competition pushed musicians and arrangers to experiment, surprise and create something the other band - and the crowd - wasn't expecting.

A tune transformed and reimagined for pan, often practised in secrecy and unleashed on the road to surprise the crowd and challenge the competition.

At Green Corner, dropping a Bomb wasn't simply about playing music.

It was about outthinking the other band.

Competition fuelled experimentation.

Experimentation fuelled creativity.

And that creativity helped propel an instrument born in Trinidad and Tobago into one of the Caribbean's great contributions to world culture.

That is part of the steelpan story we celebrate today.

Not only an extraordinary instrument, but the ingenuity, rivalry, imagination and relentless creativity that kept pushing it forward.

On World Steelpan Day, we remember a small corner of Port of Spain that became part of the much bigger story of how the steelpan - Trinidad and Tobago's gift to the world - evolved.
