Planning to ride Hualien to Wuling? Read this before you pick a date.
The road is NOT closed. The Taiwan KOM Challenge still runs on 2 November
over this exact route. What is happening is roadworks on the Central
Cross-Island Highway, and they decide when you are allowed to move.
Three things most riders get wrong:
1. You cannot ride it at night.
The whole highway is shut from 18:30 until 06:30 the next morning. Not
reduced traffic, not one lane. Closed. Your support vehicle cannot get
in either. "I will just ride overnight to avoid the queues" is not a plan.
2. It is two sections, not one, and the rules are different.
Tianxiang to the Taroko entrance opens in five windows a day, and two of
them are five minutes long. Guanyuan to Tianxiang is two-way all day
until 16:30, but with four separate construction points that each hold
traffic on their own schedule.
3. Your hard deadline is 16:30, not sunset.
Past that, the western section goes exit-only. Miss it and you are not
getting up the mountain that day, no matter how much daylight is left.
So can you do it in one day? Yes, but there is exactly one way: take the
06:30 window at the Taroko entrance, clear Tianxiang before 08:00, climb
through the day, and be past Guanyuan by 16:30. There is very little
margin in that.
Prefer to enjoy it? Ride in on the 17:00 window, sleep at Tianxiang, and
start fresh at 06:30 with a full day ahead. Or climb Wuling from the west
via Puli, which is not affected by any of this.
We put the full hours, the four waiting points, a route profile and
photos from the road into one page:

One caveat we want to be upfront about: these hours are from the
September 2026 notice. The control is published month by month, so check
the current one before you commit. We also could not find any exemption
for bicycles in the notice text, so plan as if bikes are treated the same
as cars until that is confirmed.
Riding this in October or November? Tell us your dates and we will check
the notice for that month with you.
