You can always spot elephants in Tanzania, but the moments you remember are often the ones you never expected.

A herd quietly crossing your path.
A curious calf staying close to its mother.
The whole family pausing to watch you as closely as you watch them.

These are the moments we love most about safari.

Our guides know when to move on and when to simply stop, switch off the engine and let the moment unfold.

All the footage here was captured by our guests, filmed on safari with one of our guides.

Happy World Elephant Day! 🐘

Meet Sandra - co-founder, planner and the voice you’ll likely hear from long before your safari even begins 🇹🇿

Sandra grew up in Germany and studied business management at the University of Potsdam before building a career in tourism sales and marketing.

Her path to Tanzania began in 2012, when she met Michael during a work trip scouting routes and accommodations across the country. By the end of 2014, she had moved here for good.

Sandra brings structure and care to every itinerary. She’s the person our guests speak with from the first inquiry to the final goodbye and often long after they’ve returned home.

The planning is what she loves most: the conversations, the details and the process of building something deeply personal.

Today, Sandra shapes each safari around the traveller in front of her - their pace, their curiosities, the things they’ve always hoped to see and the things they didn’t yet know to ask for.

For Sandra, the safari is never just a trip. It is just one chapter in a much longer relationship.

Tanzania’s wildlife doesn’t exist in isolation.

Behind every unforgettable safari are the people who make these wild places possible:

➡️ The guide who has spent years learning the patterns of the bush.

➡️ The ranger who patrols before sunrise to protect these landscapes.

➡️ The local communities who live alongside wildlife and play an important role in its future.

➡️ The lodge teams who welcome guests and share their home with travellers from around the world.

Conservation is not only about protecting animals. It is a daily commitment made by those who understand, protect and share these landscapes.

As a locally owned team, this belief shapes how we operate.

We work with lodges that take their responsibilities seriously, support guides and staff from communities surrounding the parks, and we plant a tree for every safari booked with us.

Small commitments, but ones that add up.

On World Nature Conservation Day, we are grateful to be part of a country where people and wildlife continue to shape each other’s future.

Swala Camp, Tarangire National Park 🐘

Tucked away in the quieter southern reaches of Tarangire National Park, Swala Camp by A&K Sanctuary sits on the edge of the Gurusi Swamp beneath a canopy of ancient acacia trees.

The camp has just twelve canvas tents, each raised on a wooden platform with views across the savannah and the wildlife-rich waterhole.

The waterhole is undoubtedly the heart of the camp. Elephants are frequent visitors, joined by impala, mongoose and, on occasion, even lions and leopards. All drawn to this reliable water source, especially during the dry season.

The open lounge, dining area and pool are built around a magnificent baobab tree, offering sweeping views across the surrounding grassland.

Evenings are best spent around the camp’s own sunken boma, a cosy fire pit that’s perfect for unwinding, sharing stories and enjoying the star-filled African skies. With minimal artificial light, it’s also a wonderful place for stargazing.

It’s a quieter corner of Tanzania, which is exactly why we like it.

July in the Serengeti - a dry season transformation 🇹🇿

The dry season is well underway. Vegetation is thinning, water sources are diminishing and wildlife is easier to spot than at almost any other time of the year.

Encountering a cheetah on safari is one of those classic Serengeti moments that stays with you long after your journey ends. Naturally elusive, cheetahs avoid larger predators such as lions and spotted hyenas, making every sighting feel that little bit more special.

This cheetah has claimed a termite mound as a lookout, giving it a clear view across the open plains as it scans for prey.

At this time of year, the Great Migration herds are also making their way into the northern Serengeti, making July one of the most rewarding months to visit.

If you’re thinking about a summer safari next year, it’s worth starting the conversation early before accommodation gets booked and flight prices increase. We’d be happy to help you choose the right route for your trip.

Drop us a message on WhatsApp (+255 740 983 817) and we’ll talk through what’s possible for your dates together.

A day in the wild at Mkomazi Wilderness Retreat 🇹🇿

Your day begins on foot, with a morning walking safari through the bush.

Back at camp, lunch awaits beneath a tree, a slow pause in the middle of the day.

In the afternoon, head out by vehicle towards Dindera Dam, where the wildlife gathers to drink as the light softens. You take sundowners here, with the dam and its visitors in full view.

Dinner is then served under the stars back at camp. The day closes with a night game drive in search of the nocturnal species only the dark reveals.

Northern Tanzania still holds places many travellers have never considered. We’ve been exploring them slowly and would love to show you.

Sundowners with Mkomazi Wilderness Retreat, one of our favourites 🇹🇿

There’s something about ending a long day in the bush with a drink in hand as the light softens over an outstanding viewpoint.

It is one of those moments our guests remember even long after they have returned home.

September and October are an excellent window for it. The dry season brings clear skies and good wildlife visibility, and Mkomazi remains one of the quieter corners of northern Tanzania, which is part of its charm.

If a September or October safari has been on your mind, now is a good moment to lock in dates.

Most of our safaris begin in English, from the first WhatsApp through to the final debrief.

With Sandra on the team, German works just as well, which our guests from Germany, Austria and Switzerland often appreciate.

Out on safari, the language mix becomes even broader. Whichever language you feel most comfortable in, there’s a good chance someone on the team can share the bush with you in it

Mkomazi Wilderness Retreat ⛰️

Set in the heart of Mkomazi National Park, Mkomazi Wilderness Retreat is one of those camps where the view does as much work as the wildlife. Its elevated position blends naturally into one of Tanzania’s most striking landscapes.

From the open dining area and private viewpoints, the horizon stretches across the Pare Mountains, with Kilimanjaro often visible on the horizon and the park’s main watering hole spread out across the plains below. It is a setting where the landscape itself becomes part of the experience, long before the wildlife appears.

Just seven luxury tents, each raised above the Dindira plains and designed with space and simplicity in mind - walk-in bathrooms, rain shower and wide verandas.

Janush and Savannah manage the camp with a hands-on, personal approach that reflects its scale. Everything here feels considered, from the pace of the day to the smallest detail in service.

The food is a particular point of pride. Ingredients are locally sourced and come from organic farms, including their own Kimango Farm in Southern Tanzania.

Our guests particularly enjoy afternoons on the veranda or up at the viewpoint, watching wildlife naturally come and go at the watering hole below while the light shifts across the plains.

A day in the Ngorongoro Crater 🇹🇿

The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, Ngorongoro Crater is what remains after a massive volcano collapsed in on itself around two to three million years ago.

The crater floor stretches 260 square kilometres, with walls rising 600 metres above. The descent from the rim takes about 30 minutes, and from there the crater opens out into one of the densest concentrations of wildlife on the continent.

Around 25,000 large animals live on the crater floor year-round, including one of Tanzania’s strongest remaining populations of black rhino. Lions, elephants, hippos at Lake Magadi, large herds of wildebeest and zebra that don’t migrate out, and pink lines of flamingo along the soda lake. The Big Five are all present, though leopard sightings remain rare.

While many safaris descend early in the morning, we often prefer spending the afternoon on the crater floor instead. By then, many of the day-trip vehicles have already begun their ascent and the atmosphere becomes noticeably calmer.

The light softens against the crater walls, wildlife gathers around the water sources, and the experience tends to feel slower and less crowded.

📌 A few practical notes: off-road driving is not permitted, so a knowledgeable guide and a good pair of binoculars make all the difference. Most itineraries spend one full day here with accommodation at one of the lodges along the crater’s edge.
