🇿🇲 AFRICA FREEDOM DAY DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE

My Food is African,
My Food is Zambian

What we eat is deeply connected to who we are.

Long before modern food systems, Zambia’s indigenous grains, vegetables, and seed systems nourished communities, protected biodiversity, and carried generations of knowledge. Today, as traditional foods steadily disappear from our tables, important questions emerge about health, culture, sustainability, and identity.

This African Freedom Day, 'My Food is African' campaign brings together farmers, nutrition experts, market voices, restaurateurs, and food systems advocates in a powerful new documentary exploring Zambia’s journey toward sustainable and resilient food systems through agroecology and biodiversity.

From the field to the market and into our kitchens, the documentary reflects on why indigenous foods matter not only as part of our heritage, but as part of our future.

Featuring contributions from the National Food and Nutrition Commission , CSO-SUN Alliance, agroecology farmers, and champions of traditional Zambian cuisine.

Passed down. Practiced for years. Alive in front of you.

Coconut cracked, grated, pressed by hand. Chapati rolled thin and perfect without a single measurement. Papaya turned into spirals you didn't think fruit could make. Tuna sliced by eye, steady as muscle memory. Spices chosen without hesitation, like they've been carried in the hands for years.

No recipes. Just rhythm. Just memory in motion.

Street food in Mombasa doesn't introduce itself politely. It shows up in color, crunch, and curiosity.
Mabuyu. Custard apples straight from a basket on the ground. Something fried, something wrapped in newspaper, cassava crisps, haluwa. The Coast has a whole food language, and this is just the beginning.

Which of these would you like to try?

Nairobi surprises you every time.
The city moves fast, but the food tells a slower story. Upcountry recipes, family techniques, the kind of cooking that does not make it onto any menu. We are bringing it all into one kitchen.

As I strolled through a Kigali neighborhood and stirred the pot in a family courtyard, my cooking class made me feel like part of the family and gave me an unfiltered view of Rwandan life.

You have questions before you eat somewhere new. That is completely fair.
Here is what we can tell you. Every ingredient on your plate was sourced fresh that day. Every kitchen we work in has clean running water and meets our hygiene standards. Every dish is cooked through and served hot. And yes, handwashing is part of the routine, not an afterthought.
We have been doing this long enough to know what matters to you. Come eat with us.
