The History of Reaching the Glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, is the highest mountain in Africa. Its highest point, Uhuru Peak, is located on Kibo, the highest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones.
The history of reaching the summit goes back to the 19th century. In 1887, the German explorer Hans Meyer made his first attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, but he was unable to reach the summit because of the difficult ice, snow, and steep terrain.
In 1889, Hans Meyer returned with the Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller, together with local guides and porters, including the legendary Tanzanian climber Yohana Lauwo. On 6 October 1889, they successfully reached the summit of Kilimanjaro.

The Story of the Rongai Route – Mount Kilimanjaro
The Rongai Route is one of the most beautiful and unique routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Located on the northern side of Kilimanjaro, close to the border between Tanzania and Kenya, Rongai offers travelers a quieter and more peaceful experience compared with some of the mountain’s more popular routes.
What makes Rongai special is its wilderness, beautiful landscapes, and sense of adventure. The journey begins in the forests on the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, where trekkers can experience the natural beauty of Tanzania away from the busy tourist trails.
As you climb higher, the landscape slowly changes. The green rainforest gives way to open moorlands, spectacular volcanic scenery, and eventually the high-altitude alpine desert. Along the way, trekkers have opportunities to see unique plants, birds, and sometimes wildlife.
One of the most memorable features of the Rongai Route is the view toward Kenya and the vast African plains. On clear days, the northern side of Kilimanjaro offers breathtaking views that make every step worthwhile.
