In Ukraine, we live in a state of constant cognitive dissonance. One moment, you enjoy the beautiful, peaceful views of chestnuts in bloom on Khreschatyk Street, the main thoroughfare of Kyiv, and the next, horrible things happen.

Today, May 15, 2026, a day of mourning has been declared in Kyiv. Following the attack on the night of May 14th, the clearing of the rubble at the residential building in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv has been completed. The final death toll is 24 people, including three children.

Kyiv and Ukraine are living through the 1,542nd day since the start of the full-scale invasion. On January 11, 2026, the conflict officially surpassed World War II in duration.

Lyudmila Burmistrova - a teacher whose classes at Novamova School of Ukrainian Language and Culture make the fear of making mistakes disappear.

Lyudmila has been an integral part of the NovaMova family since 2015. She brings over 40 years of teaching experience and a background in psychology. It is this exact mix that allows her to find an incredibly precise approach to each student and gently ease the fear of speaking.

Her main goal in class is to ensure that students do more than just learn grammar rules - she wants them to truly fall in love with Ukrainian culture and feel that unique Kyiv vibe.

April 26, 2026, marks the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

The 1986 explosion changed the map of Europe. Evacuating residents of Pripyat and over 160 surrounding villages were told to pack for three days, but they never returned. The disaster wiped out a massive layer of local traditional Polissyan culture.

Today, Pripyat is a vivid illustration of nature reclaiming its own. The city is literally disappearing into the forest, where populations of wolves, lynxes, and wild Przewalski's horses now thrive.

Despite the 2022 Russian occupation that sparked global concern, the facility is currently in a controlled state. The station is continuously monitored by an independent, permanent mission of IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) experts.

Before the full-scale war, trips to the Exclusion Zone were a special and profound part of NovaMova cultural programming for students. It was an immersion into a complex and painful, yet incredibly important chapter of Ukrainian history.

In 2018, we took a group of Texas A&M University students on a cultural visit to Chernobyl and the surrounding area, which profoundly impacted their perception of this human-made disaster.

Tatiana Kravets is one of the key teachers at Novamova School of Ukrainian Language and Culture . The quality of education is built on strong individuals. Tatiana has 27 years of teaching experience and has been a part of the NovaMova team since 2008. She is not just a colleague, but a great friend to us!

Her teaching experience at universities like Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, along with her higher education in Geography and Regional Studies, provides students with a deep understanding of the country and its culture. Furthermore, she is a qualified teacher of the Ukrainian and Russian languages, as well as foreign literature.

"I am a happy person. I love people and my work! Thanks to my students, every day turns into an exciting language journey!" - says Tatiana.

To her students and those who are just starting their studies, Tatiana always gives a few clear recommendations:

Rule number one when learning a foreign language: "To speak, you must speak!" Fear, shyness, and self-doubt are your main enemies.

Do not neglect grammar.

Set the menu of your smartphone and computer to Ukrainian. The first few days will be difficult, but then you will stop noticing that the language is even foreign.

Zhuka is a brilliant philologist and linguist with vast international experience, including years of teaching at Tbilisi State University and universities in Turkey. She possesses an incredibly nuanced understanding of language structure, loves every aspect of teaching, and above all, values dedication and organization in her students.

But classes with Zhuka at NovaMova Tbilisi School go far beyond a standard academic approach. She is the heart of a large, close-knit traditional Tbilisi family, where her beloved grandchildren always come first. Think Georgia’s just about wine? Think again.

At NovaMova Tbilisi School , we believe language learning goes beyond textbooks—true immersion happens when you experience the culture firsthand.

Recently, in collaboration with our partners SRAS , we hosted tea master Giorgi Bitadze for an unforgettable masterclass. Students and teachers gathered to taste his unique blends and uncover the forgotten history of Georgia’s “green gold.”

A few mind-blowing facts we learned:

• The tea harvest peaked in 1985 at 152,000 tons.

• After the Soviet collapse, plantations were abandoned for nearly 30 years.

• Today, those neglected bushes have grown into wild, towering trees in the forests of Guria and Imereti.

Giorgi harvests from these trees to create organic tea with a complex flavor you won’t find anywhere else.

Together, we brewed tea, explored subtle flavor differences, and gained a deeper appreciation of Georgia’s rich tea culture.
