Uganda has a total of 1090 bird species in its avifauna.
Sir Frederick Jackson, the then-Governor of Uganda, chose this bird as a symbol for the Union Jack in 1893. It was approved for use on flags flown by Uganda's governor by His Majesty George V of England.

Because of its beauty and humble demeanor, the crested crane remains Uganda's national bird. It appears on all state instruments as well as the national Coat of Arms. As Uganda's national bird, the grey crested crane is revered and legally protected.
