President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni says he expects to still be alive in 2036, when he hopes to attend the centennial celebrations of the East African Revival.

Speaking at the East African Revival Convention in Mbarara, Museveni, who is 82, attributed his longevity to avoiding alcohol and ci******es, eating traditional foods and staying physically active.

He also recalled that his daughters predicted in April 2025 that he could live to 100 years, meaning he would have about 18 more years to reach the milestone.

The Tooro Kingdom has drawn up a funeral budget of more than Shs2 billion for the burial of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV.

The pre-tax figure is reported at about Shs1.72 billion, covering expenses such as tents, LED screens, generators, public address systems, live broadcasting, airport reception and burial arrangements at the Karambi Tombs.

Minister for Local Government Hon. Balaam Barugahara visited Kween District, where he found pupils from nursery to Primary Seven studying in mud structures without desks or modern boards.

Pupils reportedly use blocks as seats, while the headmaster said the school has more than 400 pupils, many of whom walk long distances to attend.
The minister took note of the situation and promised to immediately forward the concerns to President Museveni to seek support for improving education standards in the community.

In another part of Kween District, the minister also found a toilet reportedly constructed at a cost of UGX 24 million, while the health centre the funds were intended for had not been completed.

Balaam said government services must reach the people and warned that there should be no room for corruption at the expense of communities that urgently need schools and health facilities.

The family of jailed opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye has challenged the date appearing on video evidence presented in his ongoing treason trial.

Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, shared a message from Deo Given Okodi, who said he clearly remembers May 24, 2020, because it was his birthday and Uganda was under COVID-19 lockdown. Okodi said he was staying at Besigye’s Kasangati home and received a box of chocolates from him.

The family argues that Besigye’s presence at Kasangati on that date raises questions about a video timestamp reportedly showing May 24, 2020, yet prosecution witness Andrew Wilson has told court that he met Besigye and Joel Wakayima in Geneva on January 28, 2024.

Wilson has testified that he secretly recorded meetings using hidden cameras and microphones and has alleged that discussions involved plans to overthrow President Museveni’s government.

Besigye and his co-accused Hajji Obeid Lutale and Capt. Denis Oola have denied the allegations.
The defence is expected to scrutinise the date, authenticity and circumstances surrounding the recordings as the treason trial continues.

Former Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo has called on Ugandans to unite behind former UN Under-Secretary-General Olara Otunnu’s bid to become the next UN Secretary-General, urging supporters to ignore criticism of his candidature.

Speaking in Gulu City, Owiny-Dollo described President Yoweri Museveni’s endorsement of Otunnu as an act of statesmanship that could bring Ugandans together across political, religious and ethnic lines.

He urged Ugandans not to engage with social media critics of Otunnu, instead calling for unity and support for his candidature.

Acholi Paramount Chief Rwot David Onen Acana II also welcomed the nomination, describing Museveni’s endorsement of his former political opponent as a gesture of forgiveness and reconciliation.
Otunnu is among eight candidates seeking to succeed the current UN Secretary-General.

Kasambya County MP David Kabanda, who also serves as Executive Assistant to Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba in his capacity as PLU Principal, says former Speaker Anita Among continues to blame him for the political developments that brought her tenure as Speaker to an end.

Speaking in a YouTube interview, Kabanda said he has tried to remain supportive of Among but is disappointed that she continues to speak negatively about him.
Kabanda also said that he and others helped facilitate Among’s access to medical care while she was confined to her Nakasero residence.

He further claimed that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba was acting on President Museveni’s orders during the events surrounding Among and that the President was consulted throughout the process.
Kabanda denied claims that he fabricated reports suggesting Among wanted to become President and was plotting to succeed Museveni.

He said he would still be willing to work with Among if she were appointed to a position where he had to serve under her, insisting that he holds no personal vendetta against her.

Kabanda added that only President Museveni can decide whether to give Among another senior position in government or the NRM, saying neither he nor other PLU leaders could prevent such a decision.

PLU Director of Communications Andrew Mwenda has claimed that Western governments, including the United States and European Union countries, are unlikely to pressure the Ugandan government over the treatment of Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused.

Speaking in an interview with The Observer’s Dr. Yusuf Serunkuma, Mwenda claimed that Western governments are aware of evidence allegedly linking Besigye to plans to remove President Yoweri Museveni through extra-judicial means.

Mwenda further claimed that video and audio recordings presented as evidence against Besigye were obtained by the US Embassy in Kampala, shared with Western governments and subjected to forensic examination, which he said found them to be genuine and not AI-generated or edited.

He argued that this explains why Western governments have not publicly condemned the Museveni government over Besigye’s treason case.

Mwenda also discussed the treatment of several opposition figures, including Erias Lukwago, Muwanga Kivumbi, Miria Matembe and Sarah Bireete, claiming they were targeted because of concerns over their opposition to reforms associated with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and PLU.

Mwenda said he believes Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s position as CDF and son of President Museveni gives him unusual political influence compared with previous army commanders.

Members of the Tooro Babiito clan are calling for a DNA test to establish whether the alleged heir is indeed the biological son of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV.

The demand follows reports that King Oyo allegedly left behind a young boy whose existence was not previously known to members of the wider royal family.

Members of the clan say they want the child’s identity and paternity clarified before conclusions are made regarding his relationship with the late King or his possible succession to the Tooro throne.

They argue that a DNA test would provide scientific confirmation of whether the child is biologically related to King Oyo.

Kapchorwa has witnessed a major anti-corruption crackdown, with several top officials arrested over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

Town Clerk of Kapchorwa Municipality Tony Ogwang was arrested on the orders of Minister Balaam Barugahara over alleged corruption. The CAO of Kapchorwa Municipality was also arrested over alleged corruption.

The Town Clerk of Sipi Town Council was arrested over alleged abuse of office and the sale of government property, reportedly claiming the items were faulty despite being used by those who purchased them.

Kapchorwa District Health Officer Dr Siraj was also arrested on Balaam’s orders over the alleged illegal approval of the sale of a hospital generator and concerns over ghost workers in health centres.

Balaam says the crackdown will continue, with 26 top officials in Kapchorwa expected to be arrested by the end of the weekend.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed that the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV be accorded an official burial.

Museveni said he was informed by Her Royal Highness Queen Mother Best Kemigisa that King Oyo left behind a young son who is the heir and will be introduced to the public at the appropriate time.

The President commended King Oyo for working well with the Central Government and urged other cultural leaders to avoid using cultural institutions to promote sectarianism.

Museveni also directed that all national flags fly at half-mast for three days the day before the burial, the burial day and the day after.
