YOUGHIOGHENY RIVER LAKE:

Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938, Youghiogheny River Lake is one of 16 flood control projects in the Pittsburgh District. The project provides flood protection for the Youghiogheny and lower Monongahela River Valleys as well as for the upper Ohio River. Since its completion in 1943, the Youghiogheny project has prevented flood damages estimated to be in excess of $569 million. Youghiogheny has the capability to store the equivalent run-off of 11 inches of precipitation from its 434 square mile drainage area. In addition to flood control, the dam helps to alleviate pollution problems by releasing additional water downstream during low water periods. Increased stream flow improves water quality by diluting polluted waters entering the rivers from towns, industries and coal mine drainage. The increased stream flow also improves the navigability of the Monongahela and upper Ohio Rivers for commercial navigation. Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Authority holds a license issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to operate a hydroelectric plant below the dam. D/R Hydro Company is the firm that has operated and maintained the plant since 1989. The power is fed into the Penelec power system and is used over its entire area which includes most of western and central Pennsylvania. The plant has the capacity to generate up to 12 megawatts of electricity per hour. This is enough to service approximately 8,000 homes for a year.

For weather and Yough Lake tech geeks:
What a difference a year makes!
Yough Lake is currently 16.5’ above the level it was at on August 27, 2025, and is currently 2.41’ ABOVE “Summer Pool.” In most summers the water starts declining below “Summer Pool” by July 1, sometimes as early as June 15.
We have already received about 8” of precipitation above year to date averages, AND, we are predicted to receive another 1.5-2” of precipitation in the next seven days.
The drought of the last two years is gone, and the soil in our drainage basin is saturated.
Enjoy the lake!
Addison Volunteer Fire Department Koval Hoagies available at the Marina Saturday August 29! Support our First Responders!

Current version of Lake map. Available at Marina office. Meanwhile, what would you like to see on the map next year? We can’t do every boat club without doing a FOIA request, and pretty sure the map would be too crowded if we did.

The Casselman River Bridge was constructed about the same time using the same techniques as the now submerged Great Crossings Bridge. It’s worth the drive to take a good look at it!

A Garrett County landmark has earned national recognition!

The Historic Casselman River Bridge in Grantsville has been added to the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, recognizing its connection to the journey of Josiah Henson, whose life inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Built in 1813 as part of the National Road, the Casselman River Bridge has been part of Garrett County’s story for more than two centuries. This new designation adds another chapter to its history while highlighting Garrett County as a destination for heritage tourism.

The recognition also comes as restoration work continues to preserve this iconic landmark for future generations.

It’s another reason to explore the history, heritage, and unique places that make Garrett County special.
