YOUGHIOGHENY RIVER LAKE:

Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938, Youghiogheny River Lake is one of 16 flood control projects in the Pittsburgh District. The project provides flood protection for the Youghiogheny and lower Monongahela River Valleys as well as for the upper Ohio River. Since its completion in 1943, the Youghiogheny project has prevented flood damages estimated to be in excess of $569 million. Youghiogheny has the capability to store the equivalent run-off of 11 inches of precipitation from its 434 square mile drainage area. In addition to flood control, the dam helps to alleviate pollution problems by releasing additional water downstream during low water periods. Increased stream flow improves water quality by diluting polluted waters entering the rivers from towns, industries and coal mine drainage. The increased stream flow also improves the navigability of the Monongahela and upper Ohio Rivers for commercial navigation. Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Authority holds a license issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to operate a hydroelectric plant below the dam. D/R Hydro Company is the firm that has operated and maintained the plant since 1989. The power is fed into the Penelec power system and is used over its entire area which includes most of western and central Pennsylvania. The plant has the capacity to generate up to 12 megawatts of electricity per hour. This is enough to service approximately 8,000 homes for a year.

Current prediction has water level peaking at 1449.5’ tomorrow, Friday, May 29. Gradually declining from there, but will be above 1446’ (7’ above “summer pool”) through Sunday, May 31. Water levels like this are usually in April, before the season begins—but there’s hope that water levels will be good in August!
We will be running shuttles to docks from the Courtesy Dock by the ramp. Wading will be slippery, so we discourage it.
Gas Dock is open, electricity to Docks One and Two will be reconnected today.
Weather should be good, mid 70s and clear through the weekend.
Still tons of floating debris, so be careful out there!

ONE MORE FOOT! By Saturday the Lake is expected to be at 1448.8’, TEN feet above “summer pool.”
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 29-31 will be clear and dry—seasonal early summer weather.
Dock access will be by careful wading or shuttle from the courtesy dock (by the ramp) through the weekend, at least.
“Par for the course” for a reservoir with a primary purpose of flood control.
There will be a lot of floating debris, including entire huge logs and trees, so be careful out there!

Geese are happy campers. Ducks, too.
Water is 1447.75’, 8.75 feet ABOVE “summer pool.” See the pictures attached. Docks are wading or shuttle access only, probably through the weekend. Gas dock is OPEN, due to valiant efforts of the George R. Smalley Company.
More rain coming, stay tuned.

All docks accessible today, tomorrow may be a little tougher. We will have to disconnect electric service to Dock 2 tonight, and likely we will have a half day power interruption tomorrow on the Gas Dock, Dock One and Dock Two as we wait for Penelec to energize our high water power stanchions.

Water up 3.5’, currently 1443.5, 4.5’ above summer pool—and supposed to top off at 1447.02’ at 8:00pm on Tuesday May 26, 2026, 8’ above summer pool!
Sooooo, we’ve moved the docks in as far as we can, and docks are accessible for today. Tomorrow may require wading or a shuttle. Fortunately tomorrow is a Tuesday!
The GOOD NEWS is that it’s not 8’ BELOW summer pool!
HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY! Remember those who sacrificed so we can live in freedom!
