- John Burke, nephew of 2nd Lt. Joseph “Roy” Burke
Yesterday, Albany International Airport had the solemn honor of welcoming home United States Army Air Corps 2nd Lt. Joseph “Roy” Burke.
Lt. Burke, a Troy native who attended Siena and learned to fly at Albany Airport, gave his life during World War II. After decades of uncertainty, his remains were identified in 2025 and returned home to the Capital Region.
Upon arrival, an honor guard conducted a dignified transfer of Lt. Burke’s casket from the aircraft to the waiting hearse, as his family stood nearby for this long-awaited return.
The procession then moved to The Hangar at 743, where family members, dignitaries, Siena University ROTC students, veterans, and members of the community gathered to pay tribute.
The moment was made even more meaningful by a flyover from a P-40 Warhawk, the same type of aircraft Lt. Burke flew during World War II.
All of us at Albany International Airport are deeply honored to have played a small role in helping welcome Lt. Burke home and supporting the final leg of his long journey to his place of rest.
