Available to approved adopters through Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC, Lacy is a stunning buttermilk buckskin mare, standing 13.1 hands. She’s a former feral mare, rounded up off the strip mines of Kentucky, and is an Arabian X Appalachian Brumby cross. She’s 9-years-old and an easy keeper.
Lacy is currently located in central Pennsylvania, and has been in training here for about a year. Multiple attempts with various trainers over numerous years have been made to get this gorgeous gal under saddle, but being ridden is just not in her cards.
If you can think it, it’s been tried. Being a riding horse is just not for Lacy.
But she has SO much more to offer. This mare loves to do obstacles and would absolutely clean up at in-hand trail classes. I’ve taken her to an extreme Cowboy Cross-Country course and not only did she love it, she did phenomenal. She’s a showmanship champ (I have videos of her pivots - they’re flawless!), and is as brave as they come. Mountain trail? She is more game than a mountain goat.
Lacy just recently returned home with me from the Appalachian Trainer Face Off .. where she won champion of the 365 Division! For those that don’t know, the ATFO summed up is an intense 3-day-competition that comprises of a technical portion, a trail portion and a freestyle.
If competing isn’t your thing and you’re searching for a companion horse, look no further - Lacy doesn’t just look gorgeous in the pasture, she’s easy to keep too.
She respects fencing and gates, is a dream to trim, and stands for the vet & dentist without sedation. Lacy is currently turned out in a mixed herd of mares and geldings (including a miniature pony), and causes no drama.
She loads and unloads in any type of trailer - slant load, straight load or stock - and hauls like a dream.
Lacy does require a handler with basic equine knowledge; she would not be a good fit for a first time owner. She does have some quirks that I’m happy to discuss with interested parties, which is why I recommend that her ideal adopter would be someone knowledgable in understanding equine body language, someone who can pick up on when Lacy is saying “this is a lot for me right now” and someone who knows when they can ask her to continue and who knows when they need to reassure her.
I also believe that Lacy would do well in a liberty situation! I’ve played around with a little bit of liberty work with her and she was extremely open to it. However, I’m not a true liberty trainer (and don’t claim to be!) and only know enough to muddle around with it. In the right hands with a knowledgeable liberty trainer, Lacy could rule the liberty world! And boy, would she turn heads and catch eyes doing it! 😍
