My Brothers,

On Saturday, June 24th, Masons around the world will join together to recognize and celebrate the 300th Anniversary of Freemasonry. In Illinois Masonry, we will “let our light shine” across the state by hosting Open House events amongst many other activities to commemorate this momentous occasion. We will take this opportunity to invite the public into our Masonic Temples, and proudly show them that we are a welcoming group of Brothers and friends. Let’s use this important milestone in the history of Freemasonry to share a thoughtful discussion about Masonry with the public.

A key message to share during these events is the timeless nature of our ancient and honorable fraternity. Though much has changed in the world since 1717, like the way we communicate, socialize, travel, and many other aspects of daily life, Masonry has adapted to every age and maintained its relevance to both its members and society overall. By focusing on the internal qualities of man, we continually bring together good men of sound character to harmoniously work together. With approximately 60,000 Masons in Illinois, we represent a significant collection of talents, knowledge, skills and abilities. Our Brothers are fathers, husbands and sons from various financial, ethnic, religious, etc. backgrounds. The Brotherly Love that we develop and share is real, and unites us into one family based upon a mutual love and respect for one another.

As we celebrate the 300th Anniversary of Freemasonry this year, I am quite proud that our Masonic legacy lives on in Illinois, across the United States of America, and around the world. Though advancements in technology continue to shape our current age, the basic curiosity about Masonry still leads many men to learn more about us and eventually ask to join our family. The commitment, dedication and care demonstrated for our “Gentle Craft” will carry Masonry forward into a bright future, and keep this great fraternity on the highest levels of respectability.

Have fun spending quality time with our Brothers, families, friends and neighbors during the local Open House events. Lastly, use the attached flyer to help promote the anniversary activities in your part of the state.

Fraternally and sincerely,

Anthony R. Cracco
Grand Master

Rest In Peace Brother John Glenn 1921-2016

Astronaut John Glenn's Scottish Rite Ring
The 33rd degree ring originally owned by astronaut and Freemason John H. Glenn Jr. (b. 1921). The first American to orbit the earth, in 1962, Glenn circled the planet three times in the Mercury capsule Friendship 7. After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1965, Glenn pursued his interest in politics. Starting in 1974, he served Ohio for four consecutive terms in the United States Senate. The Grand Master of Ohio made John Glenn a Mason at sight in 1978. In 1998, soon after Glenn received the Scottish Rite’s 33rd degree, conferred on selected members as a high honor, he wore this ring when he returned to space in the shuttle Discovery. On the journey he became the oldest American to participate in a NASA mission.
