3 tips. 1 website. 1 phone number to help keep you safe while traveling overseas.

Before your next international trip, visit Travel.State.gov.

Here are 3 things I recommend every U.S. traveler do:

1. Check the Travel Advisory for your destination.
Look up your destination before you leave. You’ll find current safety concerns, local laws, entry requirements, health information, and other important information you should know before you arrive.

2. Enroll in STEP — it’s free.
STEP stands for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. You can receive important safety and security alerts from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate while you’re traveling. It can also make it easier for them to contact you during an emergency.

3. Know where to get help.
Travel.State.gov explains what to do if your passport is lost or stolen, you’re the victim of a crime, you have a medical emergency, or there’s a natural disaster or other crisis. You can also find contact information for the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Hopefully, you’ll never need it. But if something goes wrong, you don’t want to be searching for this information in the middle of an emergency.

It’s been 13 years since I’ve been to Disneyland, and as someone who visits Disney World regularly, I forgot just how different they are.

Here are five differences you should know before you plan your trip.

Number one: You need a park reservation.
Buying your Disneyland ticket isn’t enough. You also need a reservation for the park you want to visit that day.

Number two: Everything is so much closer.
Disneyland and California Adventure are literally across from each other. You can walk from one park to the other in just a couple of minutes. No buses. No long transportation time.

Number three: Where you stay really matters.
Disneyland only has three Disney-owned hotels, but there are also Good Neighbor hotels nearby. For me, being able to walk to and from the parks is a huge benefit.

Number four: You don’t have to spend all day in the parks.
We’re here at the end of August during a heat wave, so we’ve been going in early, leaving around lunchtime when it gets hot and crowded, and heading back to the hotel to nap and swim.

Then we go back around 6 when it’s cooler and the crowds start dropping. We’ve walked onto so many rides that I’m not even sure we needed Lightning Lane every day.

And number five: Don’t skip a ride just because you’ve ridden it at Disney World.
Some of the Disneyland versions are completely different — and there are attractions here you can’t experience at Disney World at all.

Disneyland may be smaller than Disney World, but that doesn’t mean you should plan the vacation the same way.

This week, the Disney trip is mine!

I’m at Disneyland with my family and grandkids, and it’s been 13 years since I’ve been here. A lot has changed—and I’m quickly remembering just how different Disneyland is from Walt Disney World!

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be sharing what I’m learning, what surprised me, and lots of Disneyland tips to help you plan your own trip.

But for now, I’m soaking up the time with my family and making some pretty special memories with my grandkids.
