Today has been one of the busiest days we have seen yet at SendIt. Not by volume of packages; we have had many days where we have received dozens of drop-offs. Unfortunately, our drop-offs aren’t what keep our doors open.
Don’t misunderstand me, my drop-off customers are what I look forward to about coming to work every day. I see some of them multiple times a week and they are some of my favorite people to interact with on a weekly basis. They pop in very quickly to drop off a package and we get to chatting. I know where they work, what their names are, if they have pets, if they run their own small business… all just from dropping off a return or a labeled package they could finish more efficiently at home.
Days like today are what allow me to appreciate those customers. Days where I have multiple people lined up to buy labels to send packages to loved ones. Days where someone drove 30 miles to get to me because we were the closest town that ships internationally. Days where someone comes in to make 200 copies and I spend half that time fighting with my printer because the paper jams or I run out of cyan ink again.
When people line up behind my counter my adrenaline is going, my anxiety is high, and I am on cloud 9. The fact that people spend their precious time coming to my store, rather than go to the UPS store over on Delaware that has been there for over 20 years is unreal to me. They are trusting me, who has been in business for only six months.
Why?
Maybe it’s because I want to make them happy and I tell every one of them that I want this business to better our community. Yes, I opened a business hoping it would be profitable. Most people don’t open businesses thinking otherwise. But when my husband and I decided to open this business, we prayed a lot. We honestly thought it might be the dumbest idea we had ever had. But God opened every single door.
We looked at one space to rent. Just one. After our landlord saw several other business proposals he chose ours anyway.
We talked to people who were willing to invest, terrified they would say no, and they didn’t bat an eye because they had faith we would succeed.
We talked to the local post office and they have been unbelievably supportive since day one, wanting us to support each other, and not be competitors. They have given us so many tips and ideas on how we can succeed, even being closed on the weekends as we are.
We have had multiple small business owners come in to ship packages for their own business and ask how they can help us succeed, because we all want help each other succeed in this extremely tough economy.
Thank you to every one of you who has trusted us and become a customer and a friend over these past six months. It has been tough but it has been worth every minute 💙
