We spotted our first monarch butterfly visiting our Swamp milkweed this weekend! Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed plants because it’s the only food source that their caterpillars can digest. They especially love Swamp milkweed & Common milkweed, both of which are native to our area.

Support these incredible pollinators by adding native milkweed to your garden. Every plant makes a difference! 🧡

With the temperatures soaring into the 90s this week, it is important to give your lawn & garden some TLC. Gardens are like people, they rely on water to flourish.

To reduce water loss through evaporation, water your lawn deeply between 5-9 AM. This will allow the soil to absorb the moisture. Aim to water your lawn 1-1.5” per week, ideally divided into 2 watering sessions.

Remember to water your flowers, shrubs, trees, & veggies before 9 AM as well. Water deeply at the root level & avoid the leaves to prevent scorching in the hot sun. Place your flower baskets & potted plants in shaded areas to protect them.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated yourself! 😎💦

Ann Arbor is home to a dozen native bumblebees species. The three most common are the Common Eastern Bumble Bee, the Brown-belted Bumble Bee, & the Two-spotted Bumble Bee, all of which can often be observed in native perennials and wildflowers. Bumblebees possess the unique ability to buzz pollinate, vibrating flowers at high frequencies to release pollen, making them up to 50 times more effective than honey bees at pollinating certain crops.

We saw two painted turtles at Mary Beth Doyle Park on Monday, digging holes to lay their eggs!

Did you know that female painted turtles migrate from their aquatic habitats to dig 4-5” flask-shaped nests in sunlit areas with soft dirt, sand, or mulch? They lay a clutch of 4-10 eggs, cover the site to conceal it, and return to the water, leaving the eggs to incubate naturally.

Fun fact…the painted turtle is Michigan’s state reptile!
