’Twas the night before school, and all through the lot,
The buses sat waiting, their engines still stopped.
The routes had been printed, the drivers prepared,
For another school year with memories to share.
I sat there remembering summers gone by,
When kids slept till ten and the mornings rolled by.
But tomorrow at sunrise, I’d rumble anew,
With backpacks and lunchboxes and kids—quite a few!
There’s always one kid who forgets where to go,
One who’s still sleeping, moving quite slow.
One shouts, “WAIT!” just as I’m pulling away,
“I forgot something!”—almost every day!
But that’s what I love about each school year—
The laughter, the stories, the kids we hold dear.
From kindergarteners tiny to seniors grown,
I’ll safely take every one to their home.
So check all the mirrors, and start up the crew—
The summer is over, and school starts anew!
And I heard the driver shout, as morning broke through:
“Good morning, students!
Welcome back to school!”
