Shipping a JDM vehicle to Oregon? Plan the DMV handoff before the car leaves Japan.

Oregon buyers should line up the Customs packet, Japanese export docs with English translations, Form 735-226, VIN inspection, insurance, DEQ emissions planning, and plate choice before booking ocean freight.

Big catch: Oregon DEQ will not do the VIN inspection on an out-of-country vehicle, so plan on DMV handling that step. Portland and Medford DEQ areas also have different age/model-year rules.

Shipping a JDM vehicle to Illinois? Plan the title packet before the car leaves Japan.

Illinois is paperwork-sensitive: original foreign ownership docs, English translations, CBP Form 7501, VSD 190, RUT tax forms, insurance, and emissions-area planning all need to line up.

Big catch: Chicago and Metro-East emissions testing can matter for 1996+ gasoline vehicles, even when the vehicle is federally legal under the 25-year import rule.

Shipping a JDM vehicle to Arizona? Plan the MVD handoff before the car leaves Japan.

Arizona buyers should line up the Customs packet, translated ownership docs, Level I inspection, Arizona-authorized insurance, VLT/use tax support, and emissions plan before booking ocean freight.

Big catch: Phoenix/Tucson emissions areas can matter even when the vehicle is federally legal under the 25-year import rule.

Shipping a JDM vehicle to North Carolina? Don’t wait until the car lands to sort out title and inspection work.

North Carolina buyers should line up the Customs packet, translated Japanese ownership docs, MVR-1 title application, NC-licensed insurance, safety inspection plan, highway-use tax/property tax support, and county emissions check before booking ocean freight.

Big catch: North Carolina antique vehicle status starts at 30 years, not the federal 25-year import rule.

Shipping a JDM vehicle to Pennsylvania? Plan the PennDOT packet before the car leaves Japan.

Pennsylvania has a state-specific catch for many 25-year-rule imports: enhanced safety inspection and MV-426B can be part of the title path, even after Customs release.

Shipping a JDM vehicle to Georgia? Plan the tag office packet before the car leaves Japan.

Georgia buyers should line up the foreign export docs, English translations, Customs release, T-22B inspection, insurance, TAVT/value support, and metro Atlanta emissions rules before booking ocean freight.

Big catch: the 13 metro Atlanta emissions counties can change the registration path, even when the vehicle is federally legal to import.

Shipping a JDM vehicle to New Jersey? Don’t wait until the car lands to think about MVC paperwork.

New Jersey has a catch: foreign vehicle title requests go through MVC’s central office before the vehicle can be registered. Chassis numbers, certified translations, Customs release docs, insurance, inspection path, tax support, and plate choice all need to line up.

RoRo capacity is not a same-week rate alarm, but it is worth watching.

New PCTC orders can add vehicle-shipping space over the next few years. The catch: shipyard delivery dates, trade-lane deployment, automaker cargo commitments, and high-and-heavy demand all decide whether that capacity actually helps a specific shipment.

Short version: more PCTCs are a good long-term sign, but today’s quote still depends on lane, vehicle type, vessel space, fuel, port conditions, and documents.

Buying a classic car in Europe or the UK? Do the shipping and customs homework before you bid.

The real risk is not always the ocean freight. It is bad documents, unclear import eligibility, storage deadlines, duty surprises, or choosing RoRo when the vehicle really needs container handling.

TGAL put together a pre-bid checklist for U.S. buyers covering documents, EPA/DOT review, landed cost, shipping method, and when to pull AWIS in for customs and duty help.

Shipping a second vehicle during PCS?

The government POV benefit usually covers one authorized vehicle for eligible OCONUS moves. A second car is normally a privately paid shipment, and that means the family needs to plan the cost, documents, port cutoff, and destination rules separately.

TGAL’s new guide covers:

• what the government may cover
• what families usually pay for privately
• why entitlement questions belong with the transportation office
• lienholder and title issues that delay second vehicles
• how to plan around report dates, port cutoffs, and storage

PCS already has enough paperwork side quests. Don’t let the second car become one.
