St. Bernard State Park in Braithwaite, Louisiana, is a great home base for exploring New Orleans. It's an easy 30 minute drive to the heart of the Big Easy, offering water and electric, a dump station and laundry.

I've launched a new feature called "Pictures and Words," short blog posts with a few details and photos from different places. The first features Watauga Dam Campground in Elizabethton, Tennessee. It's a Tennessee Valley Authority property that offers camping, hiking and boating.

The Tennessee Valley Authority Watauga Damp Campground puts you close to the Appalachian Trail and Watauga Lake. We visited in late October/early November of 2025.

We cut our trip short to get home ahead of the big winter storm expected this weekend. With sub-freezing temps coming, we are finishing our winterizing in the Cracker Barrel parking lot in Santee, SC, where we are also spending the night.

We beat the big storm and are in Florida for a while, camping at O’Leno State Park in High Springs. First full day we paddled the Ichetucknee River, in Ft. White, a favorite.

O’Leno is also a favorite. This is our third time camping here. More to come on that.

Sunset Reef Campground is a free Bureau of Land Management campground roughly halfway between Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe National Parks in New Mexico. If you don't might roughing it a bit, it's a good home base for exploring the parks.

With its easy access from I-10, many RVers use Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna as a one-night stopover. It's worth it to stay for more than a day to explore the caves and paddle on Merritt's Mill Pond nearby.

Florida Caverns State Park is located in the northwest part of the state, and easily accessed from I-10.

We love camping at state parks. We stayed at Queechee State Park in Hartford, Vermont in during our summer 2024 trip (photo of Tracy and Blaze).

Vermont State Parks has changed its camping reservation policy for 2026. According to an email we received, as of February 11, instead of releasing all reservations on a single day each month, camping reservations will now open daily, rolling 11 months in advance at 9 a.m.

This change gives campers more chances to book the dates and applies to all parks, including Burton Island.

We like bourbon, and we like camping. We got to put both of those interests together during a Bourbon Trail trip to Kentucky. We camped at Taylorsville Lake State Park in Mt. Eden, and drove to Louisville to visit some of the best bourbon makers in the country, including Angel's Envy.

Taylorsville Lake State Park is located about 30 minutes from Louisville and close to some of the area's best bourbon distilleries.

stop at in Arrington, VA, on our way to eastern Tennessee. This was our third visit! We enjoyed the food an drinks (Taco Tuesday and $1 off drafts), and found a level spot to camp. Highly recommend! #
