Maureen and Bob are finishing up their final section after a 13 year odyssey along the AT! She’s a retired nurse practitioner and he’s a retired educator and they flew down from New Hampshire recently to hike to Springer from Spivey Gap to complete the longest footpath only trail in the world!

Congratulations to you both and your commitment to achieving this dream. I’m always impressed with the section hikers that come back year after year until the job is finally done. Great job and nice to meet you both!

Shane, aka “Pants”, and his Belgian Malinois, Zeus, recently completed the section from Spivey Gap to Hot Springs. Shane is a trail maintainer on the Pine Mountain Trail near his home of Big Stone Gap, VA. When he’s not working cybersecurity for Virginia Tech, he’s keeping bees and keeping the Pine Mountain Trail in good working order.

If anyone is looking for a good 60 miler that’s close to the AT and gives a unique view of Appalachia, head over to the Pine Mountain Trail. A link to the trail for more information is below:

Javier and his son, Juriel zuryy_media traveled all the way from Bayamon, Puerto Rico to hike the AT through the Smoky’s. They work together managing and operating a media and event planning organization. Javier has hiked the AT from Amicalola and has hiked portions of New York and New Jersey as well.

johnnyenfuego aka Guru, started a flip flop at McAfee’s K**b, made it to Katahdin, and then headed down to Springer and has been closing the gap on the last 700 miles for about a month now.

Based out of Raleigh, he recently retired from owning his own business. John was an officer in the Army, graduate of West Point, and moved into the telecommunications industry after serving his time in the armed forces.

Once in a while you meet someone out here that inspires you with their contagious positive energy and Guru is that person. There are good people in this world and I’m lucky to have gotten to know him.

Gene, a.k.a. Scout, recently began section hiking the Appalachian Trail north of the Smoky’s. He caught the backpacking bug a couple of years ago and began working in the winter researching and planning to make his AT trips as successful as possible. He’s come a long way in a short period of time.

Gene is one of the most generous and kind guys I’ve met out here. He’s been spreading his late wife’s ashes at memorable and scenic spots along the trail. The AT means different things to different people. It’s a place of healing for many. Glad to know you Gene. Keep coming back.

Saul, Jimmy, and Jacob came down recently to celebrate Jacob’s 50th birthday by hiking the Art Loeb Trail. Saul works IT in Chicago and his brother, Jacob, is a member of the air national guard near Macon, GA while Jimmy works for a landscaping company in Knoxville.

David, aka Swats, is a lawyer from Richmond, VA that recently set out on a LASH from Springer to Hot Springs and potentially beyond. He’s been hiking the AT in Virginia for years and has hit PA, WV, MD, and parts of New England on and off the AT as well.
