The first of two layers of asphalt is being laid on Owl Creek Road today, marking another step forward in the airport’s early construction work. A second layer of asphalt is expected to be added in October. Travelers on Owl Creek Road should continue to expect alternating one-lane traffic, brief delays and night work as construction continues through October.

By the end of November, Owl Creek Road and trails will be paved back in their new alignments. Work is progressing on a various utility relocations along with the road including water lines, power, and communications infrastructure.

The work is part of the first construction phase of the ASE Airport Modernization Project and is preparing the site for the airport’s 2027 runway reconstruction.

Crews are realigning portions of Owl Creek Road and the Owl Creek Trail, relocating underground utilities, extending the Owl Creek culvert, shifting the Airport Operations Center parking lot, and constructing temporary access and staging areas to support next year’s runway work.

Parking rates will be updated in both the Bear Lot and Elk Lot Aspen/Pitkin County Airport beginning Oct. 1, 2026.
The updated rates are intended to help ASE better manage limited parking availability for travelers and employees.
Bear Lot (short-term)
• $6/hour
• $28 daily maximum
Elk Lot (long-term)
• $3/hour
• $15 daily maximum
The first 30 minutes will remain free, and the existing surge-pricing structure will be eliminated in favor of standard hourly and daily rates.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is still under a temporary flight restriction from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Airlines have been working diligently to have flights coming in and going out as normally as possible. As always, please contact your airline for any questions on your flights.

To help answer questions about why the wildfire has affected airport operations, here’s some additional context: The fire is located along the airport’s approach and departure path. Yesterday, air tankers and firefighting helicopters operated in the same corridor used by arriving and departing aircraft, which required a temporary suspension of airport operations.

As of 8:20 a.m. on Aug. 20, Temporary Flight Restriction is in effect as crews conduct aerial operations to fight the wildfire. Airlines expect to operate as normally as possible today. Travelers should continue to check directly with their airline for the latest updates on flights.

UPDATE 9:39 PM: Inbound and outbound flights are expected to operate tomorrow, Aug. 20, but delays could be possible due to ongoing aerial firefighting operations. Passengers should check with their air carriers for the most up to date information.

UPDATE 6:32 PM: SkyWest has cancelled all flights for the rest of the today. Please check with your airlines for flight updates and rescheduling. A temporary flight restriction is now in effect until sundown. At this time, there is no definitive time for reopening.

EMERGENCY TRAVEL ALERT: All arrivals and departures from ASE have been suspended until further notice due to wildfire activity in the vicinity of the airport’s airspace.

Construction is underway on Owl Creek Road as part of the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport Modernization Project.
Drivers should expect brief delays as traffic is reduced to a single lane through the construction zone. If you’re using the Owl Creek Trail, please use extra caution around construction equipment in the area.
These traffic impacts are expected to continue through October.
The final image shows the affected area, where approximately 1,800 feet of Owl Creek Road and the Owl Creek Trail will be shifted about 30 feet to the west to prepare for future runway work.
Sky Mountain Park and the Butterline Trail are not impacted.
