Most people think the vacation starts when the ship sails away.

I think it starts the moment I step onboard.

Over the years, I’ve developed a simple routine that helps me begin every cruise feeling calm instead of rushed.

Here are the first 5 things I do after boarding:

⚓ 1. Complete the muster drill requirements immediately.

I don’t want it hanging over my head, and I definitely don’t want my name called over the loudspeaker later. 😊

🍽️ 2. Grab a relaxed lunch in a restaurant instead of the crowded buffet.

It’s one of my favorite ways to ease into vacation mode and avoid the embarkation-day rush.

✨ 3. Take a walk around the ship.

I like to get familiar with the spaces I’ll be enjoying throughout the week.

📖 4. Check reservations and activities.

A quick review now helps create a more seamless experience later.

🌊 5. Find a quiet spot and simply enjoy being there.

Before the sailaway parties.
Before the activities.
Before the crowds.

Just a moment to appreciate that I’ve arrived.

I’ve found that how you begin a cruise often sets the tone for the entire experience.

The older I get, the more I appreciate travel that feels unhurried, intentional, and easy from the very beginning.

After all, the goal isn’t just to take a vacation—it’s to truly enjoy it.
