A Peaceful Retreat at Sea | Our Veranda Stateroom Aboard Viking Sea

One of the things I appreciated most about sailing aboard Viking Sea was how comfortable and peaceful our veranda stateroom was.

The room featured Viking’s signature Scandinavian-inspired design—clean lines, soft neutral tones, warm wood finishes, and thoughtful details that made the space feel elegant, inviting, and beautifully understated.

And the comfort? The beds were wonderfully soft and comfortable! After long days exploring the Mediterranean, it was such a pleasure to return to a room where I could truly relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Another thing I loved was how quiet the stateroom was. We didn’t hear noise from neighboring cabins, and there were no routine ship announcements coming through speakers inside our room. We could also adjust the temperature to keep the room nice and cool, which is exactly how I prefer to sleep!

The stateroom was thoughtfully designed with a comfortable sitting area, a desk and vanity space, and plenty of storage.

The bathroom was another pleasant surprise! The shower was spacious, with a glass door—no shower curtain to wrestle with! There was plenty of room to shower comfortably, and the heated bathroom floors were such a wonderful touch of luxury. It’s those little details that make a difference, especially when you’re spending a week aboard a ship.

And, of course, there was our private veranda—a lovely place to step outside, enjoy the fresh sea air, and take in the changing views as we sailed through the Mediterranean.

What I appreciated most was that the room wasn’t simply a place to sleep. It was a comfortable, quiet retreat where we could unwind and recharge between destinations.

Sometimes, it’s those thoughtful details that make a cruise experience feel truly special.

One of my favorite spaces aboard Viking Sea? The Nordic Spa.

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere encourages you to slow down. The beautiful Scandinavian-inspired design, soft lighting, comfortable loungers and calming music playing quietly in the background make the entire space feel like a retreat.

At the center is the thermal pool, but there’s so much more to experience. The spa includes a sauna, steam room, Snow Grotto, experience showers, a cold-water bucket plunge and heated stone loungers where you can simply relax between experiences. Viking describes its spa as a Nordic sanctuary inspired by Scandinavian wellness traditions.

One of those traditions is alternating hot and cold—warming the body in the sauna or steam room before cooling down in the Snow Grotto, with chilled water or, for the brave, a cold plunge. Viking incorporates this centuries-old style of Nordic bathing throughout the spa experience.

And yes, there is also a cold plunge in the women’s locker room. I tried it…and let’s just say THAT will wake you up!

Afterward, you can settle onto one of the heated stone loungers, listen to the music and simply relax. This became one of those places where I could easily lose track of time.

For me, wellness is an important part of travel, so I loved seeing how Viking incorporated it into the onboard experience.

One thing that has become increasingly important to me when I cruise? A good fitness center.

I don’t expect to follow my routine perfectly when I’m traveling, but I do want to keep moving and get in a little strength training when I can.

On Viking Sea, I had everything I needed to stay on track. There was space for cardio, strength training and stretching, along with fitness classes—and you certainly can’t complain about working out with a view of the ocean.

I’ve learned that wellness while traveling doesn’t have to mean sticking to the exact same routine you follow at home. For me, it’s about continuing to take care of myself while still enjoying the vacation.

Why wait until embarkation day to start your vacation?

One of the things I enjoyed about my Viking Mediterranean journey was beginning with a pre-cruise extension in Rome.

Our stay at the beautiful Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel gave us a luxurious home base for exploring the city. The guest rooms were elegant, beautifully appointed, and very comfortable—an upscale place to come back to after a full day of exploring Rome.

The hotel also offered a fitness center, a delicious breakfast buffet with plenty of variety, and a rooftop restaurant and pool with incredible views.

And I have to mention the best Aperol Spritz I had in Rome!

I loved having time to settle in, explore Rome, and enjoy the destination before ever stepping aboard Viking Sea. For me, the pre-cruise stay became part of the vacation—not just a place to sleep before the cruise.

One of the things I’ve learned from experiencing different premium and luxury cruise lines is just how different they can be.
